This beautiful version is arranged as a duet for one Clarinet and one Alto Saxophone.The Londonderry Air was first collected and notated in the mid-nineteenth century in County Londonderry in the North of Ireland, however, the origins of the melody remain unknown. In 1913 the English writer Frederic Weatherley set his poem Danny Boy to the melody. There are many other settings of the Londonderry Air, with various lyrics and in musical styles from orchestral to brass band to jazz, but Danny Boy remains the best known.Londonderry Air is simply arranged in accessible keys and over a range best suited to the instruments. The Candy Cakewalk is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. The Cakewalk was popular in the early twentieth century but its origins go back to slave plantations in the nineteenth century where dancers would often compete for a prize of cake. The music was a marriage of European March and African-American syncopation and was a forerunner of Ragtime. The Candy Cakewalk is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo, some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. The playing-time is around one and a half minutes, but can be lengthened by adding repeats at the performer’s discretion.
