Dark Eyes, sometimes known as ‘Black Eyes’, has its roots in both The Ukraine and in Russia. Although it was originally known as a ‘Russian- Romani’ folksong, at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, it achieved a much wider international reputation when Italian-born British composer, Adalgiso Ferraris, published a new version in 1910. It was also later sung and recorded by Al Bowlly in 1939. It has also gained some currency as a jazz tune.

This is very handy for teachers of groups of like instruments. ‘Hava Nagila’ is an integral part of Jewish culture and it is appropriate that this arrangement would be played in the style and with the inflections of, for example, the 'Klezmer' Clarinet tradition. Although there are lyrics, the tune has gained considerable  wider  universal popularity as a dance that moves inexorably to an exciting and  exhausting climax.

This is very useful for teachers of groups of like instruments.  The Merry Widow Waltz is probably the most well-known and enduring melody from Franz Lehar’s Operetta ‘The Merry Widow’, first performed in 1905. Immediate success followed in both London and in America, and it was later adapted as a Ballet. There have been many subsequent arrangements of different elements of the Score that invariably include the ’molto sentimento’ Waltz, itself.

‘Plaisir D’Amour’, ‘The Pleasure of Love’, was written by G. H. Martini in 1784. It has remained extremely popular inspiring contemporary versions like Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ and many recordings by well-known artists like Paul Robeson, Nana Mouskouri and Charles Aznavour.

Gustav Lange (1830-1889) was a German composer known mainly for his salon music for the piano. Encouraged by the success of some 1860s compositions, he produced a large number of works, most of which were light and popular piano pieces of which he wrote around 500. Edelweiss op. 31 and Blumenlied op. 39 are perhaps two of his best-known works today.

Pastoral Symphony is the 13th movement in Handel's Messiah. This is the beginning of Scene 4 of the oratorio, The Annunciation to the Shepherds, after the birth of Jesus.

The word pastorale in baroque music is a melody in thirds over a drone bass. Originally called Pifa, this movement was named after the shepherd bagpipers - pifferari - who used to play their instruments in the streets of Rome at Christmastime.

Scored for soprano, 2 altos, and baritone saxophones. Optional parts are:

This haunting piece of music from Beethoven's 7th Symphony has been carefully abridged and arranged for Saxophone Quintet, scored for Soprano, 2 Altos, Tenor and Baritone Saxophone. It is sympathetic to the original music and should be easily accessible for intermediate to advanced players. There is also an optional percussion part on Timpani (Bb and F) that can easily be played on old fashioned hand tuned instruments, and will lend a bit more gravitas to any performance. The piece is very musically satisfying to play and will sit well on any concert or recital programme. The duration of the piece is about 4:50 minutes. The PDF is 24 pages long (A4 portrait) containing a full score and parts. Printing guidance - Score (pages1-13 print A4 double sided), all parts p14-24 (with the exception of Timpani p24) are designed to fit 2 x A4 pages on A3). Canon in D (Pachelbel) (D) (Saxophone Octet - 3 Alto, 4 Tenor, 1 Bari) - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon in D, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Saxophone Octet consisting of 3 Alto Saxophones, 4 Tenor Saxophones and 1 Baritone Saxophone. The three Alto Saxophones play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of D Major, as is the original version, but, if you prefer, another version, written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, is also available. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon in D have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements.
