Ukrainian and Soviet composer, Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938), was a highly regarded concert pianist, concertmaster and educator. Kosenko began his formal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a composition student of Mikhail Sokolovsky. While in school he served as concertmaster of the Marinsky Theatre. Aleksandr Glazunov, the Director the Conservatory, was greatly impressed with Kosenko and spoke highly of his work.  

Regarded by his contemporaries as a master of lyricism, his first compositions were markedly influenced by the works of composers such as Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and his fellow Ukrainian Mykola Lysenko.  During his short career he composed over 100 works for piano in a total of about 250 musical works. Other works include his symphonic Moldavian poem, choral and folk music arrangements, violin and piano concertos, trios and string quartets. 

During the 1930s Kosenko became dedicated to writing music for children. His first compositions for children were Four Children’s Pieces for piano (1930; this arranger has scored these four works for violin and piano, flute and piano, and cello and piano, as well as string orchestra). Program note:
In 1997, I wrote Yo Picasso for clarinetist Nancy Braithwaite and the Arto Ensemble; scored for clarinet, viola, cello and piano. The work is in five movements, each a musical interpretation of a painting by Pablo Picasso.

Fifteen years later Nancy told me she has a new group called the Emmelos Ensemble and they are planning to perform the Schubert Octet in F major, D. 803, in the spring of 2012. She asked me if I would be interested in writing a companion work with the same instrumentation as the Schubert. She also mentioned that Schubert’s inspiration was based on Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major, opus 20. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea.

My Octet in D, opus 144 (2012) is, like the Beethoven and the Schubert, in six movements. The instrumentation is, like the Schubert, scored for Bb clarinet, bassoon, horn in F, string quartet and contrabass.

About the Composition

I wrote this when I was very angry at the world.  Someday I might meet a black hound on a dark night... and we’ll both go hunting together.

Black Dogs,  Black Hounds, The Hounds of Hell,  Dogs of Hell,  Gabriel Hounds, Yell Hounds,  Barghest,  Black Dog of the Hanging Hills, Gurt Dog or the Hounds of Herne the Hunter… by whatever name, they are a common feature in the folklore of the British Isles.  The Black Hounds of Cŵn Annwn are the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh myth.  Early Christians came to dub these mythical creatures as The Hounds of Hell or Dogs of Hell and erroneously theorized they were therefore owned by Satan.  However, the Annwn of medieval Welsh tradition is an otherworldly paradise and not a hell or abode of dead souls. The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them.

About the Composer 
Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. She is the owner of her recording and publishing label Blue Steer Studios(ASCAP) which allows her to combine her composing skills with knowledge of both the business and publishing aspects of music industry. Winner of a Silver Ace Award from the Las Vegas Film Festival she has composed music for all types of media, including Film/TV, web and advertising, and her own personal music in audio CD and sheet music. In 2021 she took time off from composing to relocate her studio to Eastern Washington (Spokane) and is now getting started on new projects and pursuing music composition full time. Salmo 8 is my homage to creation. In my years as Assistant Conductor and Pianist for the National Choir in El Salvador, I enjoyed working and performing works like this one. I wrote this piece with tho main ideas in mind: first, to create with easy harmonies that could appeal to anybody and second to be able to create a work that can be performed in concert halls. Conductors and Choristers will find interesting (and challenging) rhythmic patterns that give freshness to the work and invites listeners to enjoy the music. Text is from the Bible. The work could be performed at churches and concert halls. The work is scored for SSAATTBB, Piano, and String Orchestra. Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) completed the composition of this work in 1901. The original version, scored for solo voice and chamber orchestra, is one of the Rückert-Lieder (Friedrich Rückert, poet [1788–1866]). Stanley M. Hoffman completed his arrangement for SATB chorus and piano in 2001.

Hoffman says of his arrangement: Rather than taking the easy way out by placing a pre-existing accompaniment from a piano/vocal score beneath the newly created alto, tenor, and bass choral parts (the soprano part retaining the original melody throughout), I went back to the orchestral score and created my own piano reduction. Bracketed items indicate editorial additions intended to make the arrangement more effective. The piece should be performed in a hushed manner throughout. This edition also includes a sensitively conceived English singing translation by Robert Schuneman.

In 2015, Stanley M. Hoffman inserted his choral arrangement into the original chamber orchestra score. Duration: 6:00.
