Tailleferre's last Concertante work for solo piano, written for her duo with the French singer Bernard Lefort to a text by Jean-Tardieu.  The orchestra is scored for 2(pic)121/2210/timp/3perc/hp/cel/strings and lasts about 18 minutes.  This is the piano vocal score with a condenced orchestra part.  The full score is available for sale and the parts are on rental from the publisher.

Concerto for Bass Trombone and Six Players (2006) was commissioned by the Carnegie
Mellon School of Music for the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, Walter Morales,
director. The work is dedicated to trombonist Jim Siders, for whom the solo part was written.
The work is scored for solo bass trombone with an ensemble of primarily “dark� instruments
– alto flute, clarinet, viola, cello, contrabass, and percussion. The solo bass trombone is the
focal point of the musical discourse, acting throughout largely as a protagonist – with much
material best described as bitterly lyrical. The work maintains a generally dark, obsessive,
and bitter tone throughout.
Unlike some concerti, however, the work is not about an aggression between soloist and the
rest of the ensemble. Rather the bass trombone is “first� among a collection of like minded
individuals – all expressing the same sentiments and aggressions.
The opening section is marked “spasmodic.� Quiet nervous twitches serve as a backdrop to a
melodic unfolding of the basic material and interval content. The end of this part “breaks
apart� to reveal a section marked “slow, otherworldly.� The harmonic material starts modal,
open, and “distant� in feeling (perhaps a recollection of a distant past) before becoming
gradually gnarled again.
The trombone leads towards the next section: an ever-building athletic “moto perpetuo.� This
reaches its peak in an aggressive and horribly angry climax – with a wide-ranging trombone
part marked “wildly raving; insane, ugly�, obliterated by bass drum hits and shrieking
hammer blows from the other instruments.
A nervous and timid interlude returns to the nervous twitching of the opening – though
everything is slightly slower and more hushed than before, finally breaking off into an
enigmatic coda.

Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-
Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris.After the death of her mother, Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarried with an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studiesprivately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns. At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully-Prudhomme, Michel Carré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chiefly
known today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.

Old Country Fairy Tale adapted for violin, viola and cello is a composition by Mark O’Connor that appears on the recording Appalachia Waltz featuring Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release was voted by People Magazine as one of the top ten albums in all musical categories in 1996. O’Connor scored the original recording of Old Country Fairy Tale to include doublebass. Here, he has adapted the instrumentation to call for violin, viola and cello for improved playability. The composition features O’Connor’s beautiful melodic phrases dynamically ushered into the classic setting. His theme for Old Country Fairy Tale undergoes a development of three different dance traditions found in fiddle music– the Hornpipe, Waltz and Jig,– which in broad terms, presents a unique version of a fiddle contest round. New music with an old spirit. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.
