The work is dedicated to trombonist Jim Siders, for whom the solo part was written.The work is scored for solo bass trombone with an ensemble of primarily “darkâ€� instruments– alto flute, clarinet, viola, cello, contrabass, and percussion. The solo bass trombone is thefocal point of the musical discourse, acting throughout largely as a protagonist – with muchmaterial best described as bitterly lyrical. The work maintains a generally dark, obsessive,and bitter tone throughout.Unlike some concerti, however, the work is not about an aggression between soloist and therest of the ensemble. Rather the bass trombone is “firstâ€� among a collection of like mindedindividuals – all expressing the same sentiments and aggressions.The opening section is marked “spasmodic.â€� Quiet nervous twitches serve as a backdrop to amelodic unfolding of the basic material and interval content. Published by Diana L. Appler (A0.891096). Mendelssohn abhorred Victor Hugo’s play Ruy Blas however he deemed worthy the Leipzig Theatrical Pension Fund who were producing the play. He hurriedly composed an overture in standard early romantic sonata form with dark opening chords, two distinct themes, development, restatement, and a final coda. Originally scored for winds, brass and strings, this orchestration contrasts colors between brass and woodwinds where the strings were contrasted between the woodwinds and brass.  This overture is still popular today with audiences and is fun to perform. A lyrical melody contrasts with running scale passages providing excitement and technical challenge. Grade 3+ to 4. Oversize score: Legal size 8 ½ X 14, Score only. Parts sold separately.

The magic of the sea, the beauty of ships, and fascination for the men who sail them, are fully explored in this five-movement epic work that relies heavily on sea shanties and folk material. In regarding the work in Bennett's own words, it had a lot to tell us about our struggles, triumphs, and defeats on the mighty ocean. The movements are titled; The Way of the Ship, Mists and Mystery, Songs of the Salty Air, Waltz of the Clipper Ships, and Finale, Introducing the S.S. Eagle March. This fresh, carefully edited concert band transcription has been extensively researched and will be a cherished addition to serious band literature for generations to come.
