Despite his prior collaborations with Robinson, Horner stepped aside and thus the scoring assignment went to Jerry Goldsmith.  In the years following his magnificent stretch of production in 1998 and 1999,  Goldsmith’s output had slowed to a crawl and The Sum of All Fears proved to be a welcome return to form. Featuring a song which was later revealed to be an extension of his tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, Goldsmith created an outstanding score with moments of solemn beauty contrasted with robust action music.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. When composer Jerry Goldsmith was asked to write the score for MacArthur, people were surprised that he accepted the project because they wondered what he would have left to say, musically, after Patton. Jerry‘s feeling was that MacArthur was a totally different person, and it would be a real challenge to write about another military figure but do it in a different manner. He said “it‘s much more flamboyant in a different sort of way, and it was an interesting task“. Patton enjoyed resounding critical praise and has since been elevated to the designation of a classic. The film won Academy Awards for nearly all of its major players, with composer Jerry Goldsmith being an unfortunate exception. Goldsmith had already written many scores for World War II topics in his short mainstream career, but none would prove as memorable in any part as the march from Patton, a concert hall staple for the composer throughout his career. Despite the dominance of this theme and the fact that only roughly thirty minutes of music was employed in such a long picture, the effect of his score on the film is far more complicated than many people may realize. While the famous march, with all its bravado from brass, flutes, and snare, easily represents the identity of the character and war, Goldsmith’s work for the film actually spends more time dwelling on the deeper meanings of life that the general himself explored.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. It is appropriate for schools, students and community choral ensembles. The piano bass line may be doubled by electric or stand-up bass to add even more punch. The vocal ranges are all within normal ranges. All parts include some challenging syncopation. There is a fair amount of unison singing along with sections of four and five part harmony. I adapted and expanded an anonymous poem, The Oyster, to help emphasize the need to make the best of one's life circumstances.
