Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period. El Noi De La Mare, in English A Mother's Child, is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. The tune is lovely and this arrangement for two voices and guitar takes advantage of that both in the guitar part and the harmonised vocal part. In the first act, Juliette’s Nanny encourages her to marry the man her Father has chosen for her. Juliette responds with this famous arietta – singing of her hopes and dreams for her life and of the love she hopes to find. Romeo overhears her singing and falls in love with her. The original French title is Ah! Je Veux Vivre. Another English title to the arietta is Daydreams. This uplifting arrangement has both pedal and lever harp versions that may be performed together. They only differ in the pedal/lever markings and occasional grace or harmony notes. There are numerous pedal and lever changes. The dynamics are clearly marked.

A fun and light-hearted piece. Why the hummingbird? Those cute, little, delicate creatures that just want to go about their business admiring the flowers. After living in Costa Rica for some time it couldn’t be farther from the truth, they are aggressive birds that pick a fight with anything that comes into their territory. But let’s talk about this concerto. It first began with the composer’s desire to write a concerto for flute. Influenced by the 3/8 rhythm of the piano sonatas of Alessandro Scarlatti. Hence, the first movement was born with its sort of here, there, and here again quality which reminded me of the many hummingbirds that I’ve seen in Costa Rica. The first movement also contains a quality of jazz to it and is a nice addition to the flute concerto repertoire. The second movement is slow and straight forward. It is relax time that only a flute can evoke. The third is a sort of Mozart styled third Rondo movement. But as you will listen there are some elements that have nothing to do with Mozart. The harmonies are modern as well as some of the rhythmic aspects.
