In order to give the music a feeling of authenticity, the composer researched the scales that Jewish people have used in the distant past. Present day cantors use scales that are centuries, probably millennia old. Two of these, the Ukrainian Dorian and the Magein Avot (along with the Mixolydian and Phrygian modes) form the harmonic vocabulary for Movement 2.♫ Ruth’s story is dramatic and a good vehicle for a tone poem. The first movement summarizes Ruth’s story of coming to faith and her loyalty and kindness to Naomi. The second movement dramatizes Ruth’s devotion to Naomi and the love story of Ruth and Boaz that results from it.♫ It was Boaz who first voiced the metaphor of a mother bird protecting her baby birds under her wings and how God does that for us. Published by Jesse Holan Enterprises (A0.1026725). The Island is the sister vignette another piano piece I wrote, Fives, now focusing on color as a design principle instead of rhythm. Since sound is heard from 20 to 20k Hz and light is perceived from about 375 to 750 THz, there is a huge speed difference between the two kinds of waves, but overall, waves are waves. My synesthetic view of reality allows me to see pictures and colors when I hear tones. To me, C is White, Db is Orange, D is Yellow, Eb is Seafoam, E is Green, F is Brown, Gb is Red, G is Grey, Ab is Violet, A is Pink, Bb is Gold, and B is Blue. There is some logical flow to my chromatic rainbow, but admittedly it’s a little interpretive. It’s just what I see! Associating colors with notes is a personalized thing; two of my friends both have perfect pitch yet each perceive unique chromatic schemes in their minds for tones, which also differ from mine. This project shows how I use my mental color wheel to musically paint a stormy island sunset.

It is a re-working of the earlier work Signatures (B50) for solo viola, and follows the same structure of six short movements based on note rows built around specific intervals, together with a unifying feature of a modal Scottish style folk melody. The relevant intervals are:- 1. major 3rd, major 2nd 2. minor 3rd, minor 2nd 3. perfect 4th, minor 3rd 4. tritone, major 3rd 5. perfect 5th, minor 2nd 6. major 3rd, major 2nd and major 6th The sections may be regarded as a parallel to a divertimento:- 1. Andante con moto - an expositionary section 2. Allegro scherzando - a self-explanatory scherzo 3. Poco adagio - an atmospheric section 4. Allegro - a more textural section leading to 5. Allegro - another short scherzo 6. Andante pensiero - allegro - andante - where the folk style dominates the central section which is flanked by a re-working of the theme of section 1 and then dies away as if into the mists. This arrangement is ideal for brass or woodwind quartet but the flexible instrumentation makes it playable by various combinations of conventional wind instruments.
