If you like Lady Allyson's Minuet from Robert Vandall's remarkable Book One of Celebrated Solos, I hope you will enjoy teaching and playing this piece. Mr. Vandall's love for his own students is manifest in his recognition that new pieces needed to be created for contemporary students.  His students, like most others, were starved for something new and fresh.  Mr. Vandall's compositions were a gift to them, and also to us!My compositions for Elementary and Intermediate piano students build on the ideas of composers including Robert Vandall, Catherine Rollin, Martha Mier, Dennis Alexander, E. L. Lancaster, and others.  My unique presentation continues the spirit of Robert Vandall in an important way:  not only are the sounds new for today's students, the means of communcation has also been updated to meet the needs of today's students.  Having all of the fundamental technique on the page in terms understandable to elementary piano students enables students to spend more time playing music rather than figuring out how to play music.I know full well the consequences of this approach:  weaker reading in the short term, which is more than compensated for by correct (and more advanced) technique and ability to play more, and more interesting, music.  The approach I have chosen restores playing music on the piano as the primary focus of the piano student/teacher relationship.  Learning to read music is an important secondary goal, and will, in my experience, stand a better chance of being mastered by students who have played a greater ranger of the compelling music that is available today.(PS I started putting in all the finger numbers and hand positions for elementary students because I couldn't stand hearing and seeing the incorrect technical solutions these wonderful children came up with on their own.  They deserved better.)

This beautiful piece by the amazing Scott Joplin is a combination of a classical waltz and a rag. It was forgotten soon after it was written, but became popular again in the 70s when Scott Joplin's music was revived. This arrangement for intermediate piano keeps the feel of the original. It begins in the key of G, modulates to Bb, and then returns to the original tune in the key of G again.

How Sweet Is the Torment, is a 2022 setting of Monteverdi’s Baroque aria Sì dolce è’l tormento which was published in 1624.  Its strophic composition made it immediately ‘catchy’ and its original lyrics by Carlo Milanuzzi, conveys a very familiar topic: the ‘sweet torment of a broken heart’. This song carries the subtitle: Recitar cantando, that new style of singing that imitates the inflections of the spoken text.  Text (and elocution) is/are important.  The text has been updated and put in the vernacular (English) of/by the arranger. This aria is arranged for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:35+-

Brother James' Air was composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain (1860-1925), a Scottish-born poet, author, mystic, and healer whose ministry took him to Liverpool and London, where he became known simply as Brother James. The tune is often sung to the metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord's My Shepherd, by the Puritan religious author and English politician Francis Rous (c. 1581-1659), published in his The Psalms of David set forth in English meeter (1643). The angular, highly arpeggiated tune in bar form (AAB) is both stark and lovely, rising and falling before ascending to a high tonic cadence in its final phrase. Its harmonic simplicity — consisting primarily of I, IV, and V chords — lends itself to alternate harmonizations with substitute chords. Following a short introduction, this arrangement presents the tune four times: first, alternating between the two trumpets; second, by trio of horn, trombone, and tuba; third, in minor tonality (reflecting the psalm's verse 4 and the text's paraphrase, Yea, though I walk thro' death’s dark vale); and fourth, with powerful extended harmonies and surprise cadences resolving to a quiet, peaceful conclusion.  ©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Published by Maggs (A0.1093848). Brother James' Air is a much loved setting of a poem based on the 23rd Psalm. This arrangement is a gently modernized harmonization of the traditional tune. It incorporates all 5 verses, beginning in Bb major and modulating to C major. (The 3rd verse is partially set in Bb minor.) Although arranged for advanced piano, it is not overly difficult. It would make a lovely prelude or special music for any church service. Note: This arrangement is included in my collection, “In Loving Memory,� also available on this site.
