Despite this, he deliberately set out to study Wagner's music. Tristan und Isolde was the opera Henze found most accessible and it was therefore the Wesendonck-Lieder, dating from 1858 with their clear affinity to the harmony of Tristan, which became Henze’s focal point of interest. In his arrangements he was aiming 'to evoke the pre-Tristan state. For this reason, I have selected a small ensemble consisting of seven wind instruments, two horns, harp and small string orchestra to retain the preliminary study character of these Lieder. At the same time however, I am attempting to permit the Tristanesque tone which is already inherent in the piano version to unfold through harmonic separation.' - Hans Werner Henze.

This mood seems to me folded into the Brazilian Bossa Nova, and the Brazilians? term ?saudade?; in this piece I offer up my tribute to one of my favourite composers, Radamés Gnattali (1906-1988), who wrote for every musical situation in his era in Brazil ? from the concert stage to the back alley, and everything in between. Lua para Epilogo de Verão, is dedicated to the Brazilian guitarist Fabio Zanon, who is both a great friend and a tremendous inspiration.This étude tackles solid chords and contrary motion in the left hand, and, like all the études in this collection, voice separation and phrasing. In measure 24 the guitarist must execute a diagonal barré, where the first finger covers position IV at the first string, and position V at the fifth string, hence the V/IV indication after the barré symbol. The practicalities of navigating through the different chord shapes and rhythms in the piece mean that not all notes can be held for their full, written value. Im Film wird die MELODIE (deren Zeilen eine fast buchstäbliche Umsetzung des gesprochenen Textes sind, wie z.B. „je te promets (ich verspreche Dir), durch die Handlung und die Dialoge in regelmäßigen Abständen durchbrochen, jedoch dann immer wieder aufgenommen. Vom Konzept her soll sie durchgängig gespielt werden. Die MELODIE verklingt ganz allmählich und nähert sich dem Rezitativ, ja Ausruf, so als wolle sie Elisabeth in ihrem Klagen und ihren Schmerzensschreien unterstützen und mit ihr sagen: „Je déteste la vie sans Simon (Ich verabscheue ein Leben ohne Simon). Die Passacaglia am Schluß stellt „le départ (den Abschied) dar. Der Bass, in der Regel von der Pauke gespielt, besteht aus den hohen Noten des Themas, das (von der Bassklarinette) im 1. Satz eingeführt worden war, um Simon im Reich der Toten zu zeigen. Fragmente und Erinnerungen an vorausgegangene Ereignisse werden durch den beharrlichen Bass im Herzschlag Rhythmus eingeworfen, wobei die Musik aus dem Reich der Toten allmählich von den untersten Registern, gleichsam einer Flut, aufsteigt, den gesamten Raum einnimmt und letztlich alles andere überdeckt und auslöscht. -Hans Werner Henze.

In the composition of this string quartet, I have permitted myself to be led by my personality and experiences and have attempted to relate experiences such as divorce, separation and the failure of a relationship in the language of music with the aid of notes and rhythms. As is the case with my other compositions, this quartet is more a work originating from intuition than the description of a historical event, a journey or a place. The beginning of the first movement is somewhat wild, rapid and sorrowful with an irregular rhythm. Intermittent sections ensue which are reminiscent of a jazz club. Living history is our present which we are currently experiencing. The second movement with a melancholic atmosphere is dominated by colours, the subject of searching, the search for a remedy and unhappiness. In contrast, the final movement is intended to express the hatefulness, arguments and disputes within a relationship which have been transformed into a profound trauma.
