Mary, Did You Know? - Arrangement for Voice, Piano and Guitar by Michael Thomas CoullMary, Did You Know? is a song addressing Mary, the mother of the Saviour, with lyrics written by Mark Lowry in 1984, and music by Buddy Greene in 1991.  It was originally recorded by singer Michael English and released on his self-titled debut solo album in 1991.  At the time, English and Lowry were members of the 'Gaither Vocal Band', and Greene was touring with them.  The song reached Number 6 on CCM Magazine's Adult Contemporary Chart.  Lowry would record the song several times himself, most notably with the Gaither Vocal Band on their 1998 album, Still the Greatest Story Ever Told. The song has since gone on to become a modern classic, recorded by hundreds of artists over the years, across multiple genres.  Several recordings have reached the top ten in the Billboard R&B and Holiday charts.This arrangement of Mary, Did You Know? is based on the version that popular American singer/songwriter Gary Chapman recorded for his album This Gift in 1997.

It depicts a tumultuous storm with a melody that begins simply minor, and grows into a flurry of confusion by the end of the first section. The middle section is much calmer, with slow and methodical excerpts derived from the first section and some new material, depicting the eye of the storm. Finally, the third section features a return to the beginning, albeit heavily reharmonized.The piece makes use of several keys, as well as some more complex scales. For example, near the end of the first section, the piano part features the octatonic scale, otherwise known as the diminished scale. The piece is tricky at times, and particularly challenges an ensembles ability to stay together in the transition to the third and final section, but is rewarding to the players who weather the storm with a truly evocative and gripping experience.

Canon (Pachelbel) (Bb) (Woodwind Quintet) - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Woodwind Quintet consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon. The Flute, Oboe and Clarinet play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the French Horn and the Bassoon. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (27 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. Around the year 1726, John Walsh, a London music publisher, created a wonderful forgery in order to run around the copyright laws of the day: he pretended to pirate an edition supposedly published by the House of Roger in Amsterdam. This forgery included 12 Sonatas for solo instrument and continuo which had been composed by one George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Around 1793 the House of Arnold published the same set, omitting two of the original 12 and replacing them with two others by Handel. So at this point there were a total of 14 solo sonatas available to the public.In the year 1879 Friedrich Chrysander issued these 14 works and several others in volume 27 of the German Handel Society’s Gesamtausgabe of Handel’s works. Since then they have been edited from this scholarly work many times, and afflicted by all sorts of permutations which reflect the various styles of performance in vogue over the years. One finds editions stripped of ornamentation but loaded with articulation and dynamic markings at one end of the spectrum, and editions with modest stenographic and florid ornamentation at the other. The Sonata in C Minor (London: 1712) is a pure example of the middle phase of the solo sonata da chiesa [church sonata]. The first three movements are indicative of the style found in sonatas derived from the disruptive canzona of the early 17th century. An initial slow movement with walking bass is followed by an imitative movement (in this case, a fugue with a chromatic subject), which in turn leads to an Adagio. This latter movement in the relative major is a ricercare containing several imitative entrances. The finale is a spirited binary-form Bourrée angloise, an item taken over from the French ordre or dance suite. The extraordinarily short length of this movement seems to indicate that a trio is missing here; therefore, I have added the bourrée from the Royal Fireworks Music of 1749 to act as a trio, but players are certainly free to omit it.
