A slow, soulful blues for those times when we need to play a slow, soulful blues. The title comes from a day when I was reflecting upon lost ancient civilizations and wondering about their music. What did the music sound like? Did the musicians back then have steady gigs? This is a fairly conventional 12-bar blues, however it has some interesting quirks. The 4th bar has a sustained C with V7 (#9) chords moving chromatically upwards against it. In terms of conventional harmony, the C is a wrong note on several of the chords (like the Db7). The chord changes have reharmonization in several places. The ending, with a shift to major 7th chords, is unusual for a blues. That was 27 years ago. I contacted Mr. Theel asking for permission to set his text to music and he agreed. After the music was written, it sat in my collection of original manuscripts until Imagine Music Publishing agreed to publish it. I believe performers will find Mr. Theel's words inspirational.This work is an SATB setting with piano accompaniment. I consciously kept it brief. Nothing to detract from the lyrics. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change of key, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as for use in ensemble practice between musicians of different traditions. Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his most excellent symphony, and a music critic of the time reported, this symphony is the most melodically rich and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven's symphonies..

A great piece to show off the talents of mature flute and lever harp performers, this colorful character piece is appropriate for any recital or concert setting. Mannanàn mac Lir occupied several roles in the mythological universe of the Celtic peoples. Most notably, he was considered to be the god of the seas. He was also regarded as a psychopomp-that is, a figure associated with the realm of the dead, acting as a sort of veil between the worlds. In this work, I play on his connection to the sea by quoting the traditional Manx folk tune The Storm Is Up (Callin Veg Dhoan). The tune is developed through several permutations, each portraying a role Mannanàn played. Each movement is ushered to us by a psychopomp veil. With the Churl in the Drab Coat refers to Mannanàn’s association with the trickster figure Bodach an Chota Lachtna. The movement is erratic yet impishly playful. Mannanàn was also regarded as a sort of magician king. In that respect, he was given the role of Guardian of Mag Mell, a place that is comparable to the Nordic conception of Valhalla. Mag Mell was a plain of joy, a kingdom under the sea for a select few. Mannanàn protected this realm with the help of Fragarach, a sword which could slice through any armor and could compel anyone to tell the truth. This movement is bold and heavy in spirit, gradually becoming more dissonant as if portraying an ugly battle to defend this beautiful place. The final veil transports us to the end of times, a fading away of the once-great pantheon. That storm, as all must do, comes to a quiet, peaceful end. This original song tells a fairy tail in the style of a Celtic folk song. Both the story and the tune are wholly original and were composed as part of a music production class that Mark participated in during the spring of 2022. This song tells the story of a young boy's adventure in the woods, his skepticism towards what the old folks say, and the results of his failure to listen to them. This piece by Mark R Lewis is arranged for SATB ensemble. All parts get the melody at some point and there are several duets between voices parts throughout the piece. Additionally the accompaniment voices switch between homophonic harmonies and arpeggiating chords several times for increased complexity and interest. The instrumental parts consist of vibraphone, piano, bass guitar, and floor tom parts. Any mellow metallophone would be an appropriate substitute for the vibraphone and the bass guitar part can be played on almost any bass instrument. The optional floor tom could be substituted with any other lower, resonant drum available but should not be a short, sharp sound. All that said, both the vibraphone and bass guitar parts are mostly doubled in the piano or vocal lines so groups that do not have access to those instruments should still be able to perform this piece without concern. This piece is also available for Vocal Trio w/ Mixed Ensemble and the sound files sampled here are from that arrangement. This easy arrangement for trumpet duet was adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students due to the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not preclude it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, weddings, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part.

I Had Much Grief, Cantata BWV 21. „Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21. „Sinfonia This work marks a transition between motet style on biblical and hymn text to operatic recitatives and arias on contemporary poetry.  Bach catalogued the work as „e per ogni tempo „and for all times, indicating that due to its general theme, the cantata is suited for any occasion. With its distinctive gesture of descent and the plaintive lines of the oboe and violin, the Sinfonia, held in dark minor, sets a tone of pain that is characteristic of the cantata. With its emotional depth and formal wealth, the cantata I had much grief is almost a solitaire in Bach's church music. Performed in Weimar in 1714 and later rearranged several times, it is also suitable as a compositional business card due to its high standards and its shape, which is representative of various types of sentences, and could therefore be related to Bach's application. Bach performed the cantata on 17 June 1714, as his fourth work in a series of monthly cantatas for the Weimar court which came with his promotion to concert master. The Work was transposed to D minor during the Köthen years, and used in November 1720 for a performance in Hamburg to apply for the position as organist at St. Jacobi. As Thomaskantor in Leipzig, Bach performed the cantata again on his third Sunday in office on 13 June 1723. For this performance, he also changed the instrumentation, adding „for example four trombones to double the voices in the fifth stanza of the hymn. This version was used in several revivals during Bach's lifetime and is mostly performed today.  From the plaintive sinfonia to the arias and duets touching in their pain and charm to the speaking rhythmic psalm and chorus choirs, a development arc spans that transforms suffering and grief into consolation and trust and culminates in an apotheosis reminiscent of Handel of the victorious lamb, Hardly ever has Bach put the process of a relentless self-questioning and spiritual healing as convincingly as here. This arrangement of the sinfonia is intended for modern instruments.  The original score was translated into modern music literature standards thus simplifying the approach and helping to understand the legacy of baroque music in our modern times. A few embellishments and interpretation symbols where added thus mostly shortening the length of some notes. Several years ago, I lost my father suddenly.  One of the things that helped me through the grieving proess was music.  The music of Kings of the Past and He Lives in You from Disney's The Lion King resonated in me during this time and, being a musician, I started searching for an arrangement of this for symphonic wind ensemble.  Much to my disappointment, I could not find such an arrangement.  So, I sat down and wrote this out, developing the emotional tones I felt during the process, traveling from grief and despair to eventually hope and celebraton of who my father was and that he continues to abide in me in spirit, and developing the difficuty level I thought would be welcome in the type of ensemble I like to play in.  I would recommend this score and parts to a community band or a skilled high school band, as ther are several chances to highlight the different sections of the band with multiple solos that will challenge the range on the instrumentalists.
