Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158418 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Historic,Patriotic. 31 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758704. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158418). Some of my fondest memories as a child were made during long, uncomfortable road trips. As a father, similar memories with my children are among my warmest. This three-and-a-half-minute piece of music aptly tells the title’s story. The excitement leading up to the anticipated day of departure is electric! The opening fanfare-ish intro reflects this buzz well. It is followed by a quirky rhythmic section as “helpful” kids load their poorly packed bags full of unnecessary items awkwardly into the vehicle. The fanfare returns as the family hits the road at last. As the rest of the music unfolds, imagine the alphabet game, off-key songs sung at the top of everyone’s lungs, rest stops (emergency or otherwise), spilled food, car problems, drowsiness, souvenirs, car sickness, and of course ultimate arrival at planned destinations. This soundtrack to a fun part of life can be anyone’s road trip! Work on this composition began on September 19, 2021 as a thoroughly sketched out fanfare in my manuscript notebook during a church youth activity in a park. It remained in that state until I contracted Covid-19 in July 2022 and was confined to a hotel room for a week. There, I entered this sketch into the computer, along with a dozen others. Throughout the summer, all of these works received some attention, but this one more than the rest. Much of the final work on “Road Trip” took place during a trip to Philadelphia.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432 By Stan Kenton & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Pop,World. 39 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #817754. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1221432). Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kenton’s 19-piece big band? No, not really:  no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . .   Well, you get the picture.  But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style.  And that’s what this is:  “The Peanut Vendor” in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.      Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero” (“The Peanut Vendor”) was first recorded in the late 1920s.  The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts.  Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze” in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!).       Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio Machín on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold.       English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.”  One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made.  That’s a lot of peanuts.      Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor” in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records.  His version was completely instrumental.  Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis.  A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.”  “The Peanut Vendor” subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.     This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets.  So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody.  Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba.  The “shrieking dissonances” are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone.  The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody.  Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style.  Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments.  (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances” are still there!)       Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Choral Choir (SATB divisi) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1178563 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Chamber,Classical,Comedy,Contemporary. Octavo. 12 pages. Sally Whitwell #778526. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1178563). DSCHbags vs. BACHstards was inspired by a tweet I saw once (can't remember whose) offering the world a new word 'DSCHbag' to describe classical composers who are self-obsessed enough to need to include their musical signnature in every piece they write. My quick witted friend Peter J Casey replied with 'What a BACHstard' and this a cappella work was born.Don't think I don't like Shostakovich and bach. I really them and their musical signature thing is genuinely really clever, but I can't help but liked this habit to rapper who insist on yelling their own names in their songs. That is just plainn annoying.Performance note: The singers should be arranged in two SATB quartets that are mirror images of one another, so that singers may aim each motif directly to the face of their counterpart, like a weapon of sorts, laser beams for eyes.(DSCHbags vs. BACHstards was commissioned by The Song Company).

Choral Choir (SATB divisi) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.507012 By Alan Wagstaff. By Alan Wagstaff. Arranged by Alan Wagstaff. Celtic,Folk,Irish,Traditional. Octavo. 37 pages. Alan Wagstaff #117526. Published by Alan Wagstaff (A0.507012). This is a new Irish song about the magic of Irish music. It's arranged for choir (SSAATB), harp, piano, flute, and fiddle. Elements of O'Carolan's 'Inisheer' are woven into the melody. Lyric A Song With No Tune The stories they tell in the Town of Athlone, would gladden the heart of a man made of stone. I joined in with them freely, until it was Spring, then I was off, like a hawk on the wing - searching for fortune - and something to sing. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. The pipers are proud in Kildare and Athy; there's no better music found under the sky. But, one bright Summer's evening, I left them behind; put my feet to the road and I followed them blind - searching for fortune - and what I might find. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. The fiddlers are famous from Bantry to Cork. The rake of their reels would make the lame walk. But still, at the close of a fine Autumn day, I packed up my bags and I went on my way - searching for fortune but finding low pay. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. Far up the west coast, in Aran and Clare, there's harpers to bring you a magical aire. I listened, enthralled, till the Winter came on, then pulled up my boots - and soon I was gone - searching for fortune for still I had none. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. I rested, by chance, at the close of the day, by a small rounded hill, where I happened to stray. And there, as the drowsiness over me stole, I dreamed of a woman with eyes black as coal - And the fortune she held was the song of my soul. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. Alan Wagstaff.

Soprano solo, baritone solo, oboe, violin, cello and piano - advanced - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q48163 Composed by Georg Kreisler. This edition: score and parts. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 12 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q48163. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q48163). German.Small-scale art music by Georg Kreisler (lyrics and music): Kreisler, who died in 2011, wrote the 'Untergangssextet' [Sextet of Doom] shortly before his death. He finished it save for the last bars; his fellow countryman Gerhard Wimberger added the ending (23 bars) in this version. Inspired by the pianist Sherri Jones, Kreisler, as in 'Fünf Lieder für Barbara', seized on ideas of his early piano compositions from the 1940s and 1950s. Extract from the lyrics: When the moon sets, everything is over. Then come the shadows, the weakened squadrons, the anointed sanctimonious old windbags with wind music, wind music, wind music and shouting […] The Jews take flight, the Christians take the Pope, Arabians take Mohammed. We buy and win and we take…until the end. Damn it! This is hard.
