This Missa brevis is composed for SSA, cello and marimba, but it could also be performed without the marimba part. If so, in addition to missing out on the intended sound, certain elements of harmony and rhythm will be lost. This also goes for the passages where the marimba imitates the cello. In a missa brevis (short mass), it is not uncommon that the extensive Credo is omitted, as I have done. Occasionally, to further shorten the mass, I make use of a technique that Haydn among others employed for the Gloria, where the singers sing different sections of the text at the same time. - Mattias Ekstrom Koij.

This sentence has been joined by the composer David Aberg to a verse in the Song of Solomon: Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. The piece was originally written as a competition entry: the annual Emerging composers competition, initiated by the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble based in New York City. It won first prize and had its first performance by the choir at the prize ceremony in St. Paul's Church (New York City) in June 2018.
