The first of three movements, here is a great opportunity to collaborate with a children's or youth choir and Irish instrumentalists, or to freely substitute any treble solo and Western instrumental equivalent.Included in Project : Encore 2017Lost Songs of Ancient Ireland, for Mixed Choir with Treble Descant, Piano or Harp, Bodhran, Irish Flute, and Violin, is a three-movement song cycle that focuses on the shifting relationships over the scope of a lifetime from the differing perspective of each person involved. I.  Old Beggarman- Two interwoven jigs, It Was an Old Beggarman, Weary and Wet and Ag an mBóithrín Buí (At the Yellow Little Road), of both a young lady's observation of a wandering beggarman and his unrequited, possibly unexpressed, love for her.  They are offered together as alternate perspectives from potential romantic partners, and  features lilting, mouth music, or portaireacht bhéil (port a'bhéil, mouth-singing) as it is known in Irish Gaelic.II.  I Would Rock My Child to Sleep- A sentimental Irish lullaby Irish lullaby Do Chuirfinnse Féin Mo Leanbh a Chodladh (I Would Put My Own Child to Sleep) highlights the shifting roles of a caregiver: the parent full of hopes of the parent for the child morphing over a lifetime into a blessing from the grown child to the aged parent. Each verse is progressively based upon an overall narrative:   1. hopes of the parent for the child   2. an easy, natural rhythm to family life, possibly the child is older now, and there is a dream of family continuance   3. uncertainty over who is nurturing who: does the child now sing to comfort the parent?     4. a closing blessing for peace and rest that hearkens back to the successful sleep of a tired infant III.  The Drummer- An energetic reel,  a combination of Maidin Fhómhair, nó Cailín Péacach (The Harvest Maiden, or Sprouting Maiden) and Cormac Spáinneach, nó An Drumadóir (Cormac Spaineach, or The Drummer), alternating between romantic partners encased by a nostalgic love song, suggesting the passing of a lifetime.Commissioned by Cora Voce; Tacoma, WASet of three and single movements available for purchase.2017 Choral Contest EntryLaurie Betts Hughes, ASCAP | www.LaurieBettsHughes.com

Published by Robert Chamberlin (A0.917288). The Child is a Song was composed in 1994 and is dedicated to Dawn Schuessler and the handbell choir of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in St. Louis, MO. The premiere performance of this piece happened that year on Christmas Eve, performed by singer/songwriter and guitarist Peter Mayer, accompanied by piano and two members of the Gethsemane handbell choir playing on bell trees to accommodate the ostinato patterns. This version is for piano and tenor voice, with optional handbells. If handbells are used, they should duplicate the right hand piano part at m. 16 – 28, m. 53 – 54, and m. 59 – 64. These measures have been marked on the score with an * sign.  The sound clip attached is a digital track which is not ideal since the lyrics are not sung by the digital tenor.  Hopefully, this does not detract from the overall score.

Es por eso que en la pieza, La Suche (representada por la violinista) empieza a cuestionarse por su silencio, y le reza a Guacha?n (San Sebastia?n, santo patrono de Carazo); pero en vez del santo, se le aparece Quetzalco?atl, quien le da valor y fuerza. Poco a poco ella siente co?mo surge su voz, alternada con vocales y sonidos reiterados, que se mezclan con un violi?n impetuoso, hasta que en ella se construye el habla y termina diciendo : “Ya neme nequi nitipampa” (Yo estoy aqui?, defendiendo mi causa). ----------------------------------------------This piece is inspired by Suche Malinche, one of the characters of “El Gu?egu?ense o Macho Rato?n”, a Nicaraguan play and also Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In this play, the Gu?egu?ense convinces Governor Tastuanes (Suche Malinche’s father) to marry the girl to one of his sons (Don Forcico). The Suche Malinche Prelude arises from the need to empower this woman, whose function in El Gu?egu?ense is to be an instrument to gain access to power. Neither her voice nor her will exist. That is why in the piece, La Suche (represented by the violinist) begins to question her silence, and prays to Guacha?n (San Sebastia?n, patron saint of Carazo); but instead of the saint, Quetzalco?atl appears to her, giving her courage and strength. Little by little she feels how her voice emerges, alternating with vowels and reiterated sounds, which are mixed with an impetuous violin, until she builds her speech and ends up saying: “Ya neme nequi nitipampa” (I am here, defending my cause.).

In the 8th century, a monk named Dallan Forgaill wrote the Irish poem, Rop tú mo Baile (Be Thou my Vision), to remember and honor the faith that St. Patrick had shown in his defiance of King Logaire of Tara’s decree three centuries earlier. His poetry lived on as a part of the Irish monastic tradition for centuries until, in the early 20th century, Mary Elizabeth Byrne translated the poem into English, and in 1912, Eleanor Hull versified the text into what is now the lyrics of a well-loved hymn. The music SLANE is an ancient Irish folk tune which became a hymn tune when it was arranged by David Evans and set to the Irish hymn Be Thou My Vision in 1927.  This hymn acts as a prayer to our God that He would be the first that we seek after, and continually refocus the direction of our life.  This arrangement is for 4 part male harmony (TTBB) a cappella.
