Nocturne in B flat Major by Maria Szymanowska

Maria Szymanowska born Marianna Agata Wołowska; Warsaw, December 14, 1789 – July 25, 1831, (St. Petersburg, Russia) was a Polish composer and one of the first professional virtuoso pianists of the 19th century. She toured extensively throughout Europe, especially in the 1820s, before settling permanently in St. Petersburg. In the Russian imperial capital, she composed for the court, gave concerts, taught music, and ran an influential salon.

Her compositions-largely piano pieces, songs, and other small chamber works, as well as the first piano concert etudes and nocturnes in Poland-typify the stile brillant of the era preceding Frédéric Chopin. She was the mother of Celina Szymanowska, who married the Polish Romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz. (Wikipedia)

Nocturne No.3 in B Major, Op. 9 - Chopin - Piano Solo. The Nocturnes, Op. 9 are a set of three nocturnes written by Frédéric Chopin between 1830 and 1832, published that year. The second nocturne of the work is regarded as Chopin's most famous piece. Chopin's nocturnes numbered 1 to 18 were published during his lifetime, in twos or threes, in the order of composition. One of the greatest innovations made by Chopin to the nocturne was his use of a more freely flowing rhythm, a technique based on the classical music style. This new edition also contains a brief biography of Chopin and Information of the 3 Nocturnes. All 3 Nocturnes are also offered as a set at a discounted price (S0.793427).

By Frederic Chopin. By Frederic Chopin. Arranged by Frederic Chopin. Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score. 3 pages. Unimusic Academy (Academia Unimusica) #743864. Published by Unimusic Academy (Academia Unimusica) (A0.1143547).

Chopin composed his best-known Nocturne in Eâ™ major, Op. 9, No. 2 when he was around twenty years old. This well-known nocturne is in rounded binary form (A, A, B, A, B, A) with coda, C. It is 34 measures long and written in 12 8 meter, having a similar structure to a waltz. The A and B sections become increasingly ornamented with each recurrence. The penultimate bar utilizes considerable rhythmic freedom, indicated by the instruction, senza tempo (without tempo). The nocturne opens with a legato melody, mostly played piano (quietly), containing graceful upward leaps which becomes increasingly wide as the line unfolds. This melody is heard again three times during the piece. With each repetition, it is varied by ever more elaborate decorative tones and trills. The nocturne also includes a subordinate melody, which is played with rubato. A sonorous foundation for the melodic line is provided by the widely spaced notes in the accompaniment, connected by the damper pedal. The waltz-like accompaniment gently emphasizes the 12 8 meter, 12 beats to the measure subdivided into four groups of 3 beats each.

Composed by P. F. Strohm. Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Sacred. Score and part. 20 pages. Pete Strohm Music #6715083. Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.928176).

Nocturne No. 1 for Flute and Piano, from American composer P. F. Strohm, is a tonal work in B Major for mid-level flutists with a range of D#4 to B6. It has a relaxed tempo with long melodic lines and beautiful ornaments. Nocturne No. 1 will benefit mid-level players in breath control and phrasing. The interaction with the accompaniment creates sensitivity on the part of both players. The last statement of the main melody adds additional grace notes challenging mid-level players to place and articulate them musically. Overall, the work is very playable and pleasing for both performers. Level of difficulty is Medium. Performance time is 5:42. Member, ASCAP.

SKU: A0.549478

Composed by Alexander Scriabin. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3499993. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549478).

Alexander Scriabin Op. 11 No. 2. Score: 8 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 2 pages. Duration: 3:10. An introspective and meditative work with a lot of dynamic and phrasing nuance. Works well for church meditations or recital encores.

Background

Op.11/2 Alto Clarinet version. First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt.

Forms

Likewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality.

Philosophy

Scriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. He was above all particularly fascinated by Nietzsche, Delville, and Blavatsky. Consequently, he finally established his own ideas about metaphysics and certainly mysticism. Scriabin consequently advanced theories about the relationship between color and musical keys.

Synesthesia

He also may have experienced a condition called synesthesia where he could probably sense a response created from a different stimulus. Therefore, it was almost as if he could see music and hear colors. Scriabin, therefore, arranged the colors in a circle similar to the circle-of-fifths and assigned each key area a color. Finally, he assigned the key of C to the color red, while the key of G was orange. Similarly, he assigned D to yellow, A to green, and so forth. Strangely, he did not differentiate between major and minor key colors.

 Multimedia

Hence, his ability to translate colors into music certainly gave Scriabin a most noteworthy interest in creating multimedia events. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain.

Modern Performances

In modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.
