Adrian Le Roy and his cousin Robert Ballard founded the printing firm Le Roy & Ballard, and in August 1551 obtained a royal privilege from Henry II to print music. In February 1553, the company was awarded the title of imprimeur du Roi en musique. Over the following two decades, other rival companies dropped out of the market, and from the 1570s onwards Le Roy & Ballard enjoyed a virtual monopoly in music publishing. The publishing house lasted until the 19th century. While Robert Ballard looked after the business side, Le Roy was the artistic director. He achieved renown as a composer and arranger of songs and instrumentals, his published work includes at least six books of tablature for the lute, 5 volumes for the guitar, and arrangements for the cittern. These compositions are presented in the same order as they appeared in the original work published in Paris by Le Roy et Ballard. They were transcribed from a facsimile edition of the original manuscript and every effort has been made to transcribe the original tablature into modern, easy-to-play, tablature and notation.

In the spirit of the time Blainville was a practical musician, composer, theorist, historian and, in some way, an encyclopedist. As practical musician and composer he was cellist and it is known that he played his own compositions at the Concert Spirituel in Paris, but neither his performances nor his compositions met with outstanding success.As theorist Blainville claimed the discovery of a third mode (mode mixte) between major and minor, unfortunately his harmonic theories did not have the expected success.As historian and encyclopedist we found his work Historie générale et philologique de la musique, published in Paris in 1767. The work is in consonance with other contemporaries works such as Rousseau’s Dictonaire de Musique (1768) or the Essai sur la musique ancienne et moderne, published around 1780 by M. de Laborde and Pierre Joseph Roussier. As in these works, the work of Blainville broadly covers the musical knowledge, including theoretical-musical, stylistic, historical and ethnographic aspects. Framed in this last aspect we find a chapterdedicated to the music of the Turks. And it is in this chapter we find the musical pieces used in this arrangement.

Guillaume de Morlaye, (c. 1510-c. 1558) was a French Renaissance-era lutenist, composer, and music publisher. He was a pupil of Albert de Rippe and lived and worked in Paris. In 1552 Morlaye received a ten-year license to publish music from Henry II, and between 1553 and 1558 published four lute collections in cooperation with Michel Fezandat, six lute collections compiled by Albert de Rippe, and also lute arrangements of Pierre Certon and Claudin de Sermisy. He also published four books of his own four-course Renaissance guitar compositions from 1552–53, including fantasies and dances, I encourage you to experiment with ornamentation for each piece and make them your own. The first one is perhaps the most famous, but the others are charming too. Here we have all four plus an introduction too.My guitar trio arrangement is based on a facsimile of an original piano reduction with extra countermelodies to thicken the texture.This composition has been arranged by many people to be played on piano or by full orchestra, and quite often one or more of the waltzes is omitted, or they are played in a different order or a different number of times. It’s fair to say there are probably a dozen variants! More than that, each arranger seems to take it upon themselves to write an introduction. In keeping with that tradition, I have penned an introduction too... it’s a mysterious, slightly slow, statement of the first theme, which, as the first Waltz starts, comes alive at tempo.In this particular arrangement, I’ve made sure everyone has the tune at some point - with about five minutes of music here, it’s not right that some parts are in the limelight and others aren’t - music is for sharing! At phrase boundaries, the roles of tune, countermelody and accompaniment all move round.In concert, one might consider omitting one of the Waltzes if time is at a premium.
