El Camino Real (The Kings Highway) was a trail first established by the Spanish in the 1700's, along which the Franciscan fathers traveled to establish missions. In the 1800's it was used as a stagecoach route by settlers. This piece is a musical depiction of the stagecoach ride which originated in Mexico, came through San Antonio and Austin, passed through the hill country of Texas and continued through Louisiana, ending in Mississippi. The trail crossed 12 rivers, including the Rio Grande. El Camino Real from A Texas Symphony is also stand alone piece, and is about 12 minutes in length.. The music begins with a Spanish flair in Mexico, features a beautiful sunrise over the river, hill country bird calls, travels in the coach through the city of Fredericksburg incorporating a polka theme, and then travels out the state.

You Are My Sunshine is an old-time standard of country music and it has become the unofficial anthem of the state of Louisiana, thanks to the composer's connection to the state (he was governor). The song has been covered by: Gene Autry, Johnny Cash, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Aretha Franklin, Loretta Lynn, Chet Atkins, Ray Charles and even Christian Perri. In the year 2000 this song experienced a resurgence when it was used in the Coen Brothers movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? In this String Trio Arrangement, the 2nd Violin plays the melody for most of the duration.

You Are My Sunshine is a song copyrighted and published by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell in 1940. According to BMI, it has been recorded by more than 350 artists, and translated into 30 languages. In 1977, the Louisiana State Legislature decreed that You Are My Sunshine would be a state song, to honor two-time governor Jimmie Davis. This version features a root-based chord-blocking that John and I have used in many of our arrangements. This one sounds pretty cool when played with a lively, country-western rhythm. We hope you like what we've done with the song!
