The original piano rag, which was once advertised by Joplin's publisher as being as high-class as Chopin, was composed upon the occasion of the World's Fair in St. Louis in 1904. This World's Fair was known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and celebrated the centennial of the historic event that doubled the size of the United States and launched an age of exploration and Western expansion. The fair, which attracted an estimated 20 million people from around the world, encouraged visitors to look back to the nation's frontier days while looking ahead to progress in the fields of technology, science, and medicine. Exhibits from fifty foreign countries and almost all of the states ensured that fairgoers had a good time.

The cascades of Joplin's title were part of the most beautiful feature of the Exhibition, as a souvenir photo book from the fair phrased it. Fourteen waterfalls flowed into a basin in front of the fair's centerpiece, Festival Hall, with the Colonnade of States surrounding it. Festival Hall was the fair's main venue for music performances and housed the world's largest pipe organ at the time. Joplin probably visited the fair when it opened, and the Cascades rag could often be heard there.

Katrina is a piece I wrote after the historic category 5 hurricane that made landfall on the coast of Louisiana on August 25, 2005, carrying winds up to 175 mph, causing over 1,800 fatalities and $125 billion in damage. It's a piece I dedicated to my father who was there and lived through it. I tried to capture moments throughout the storm, glimpses through the music, though it is difficult given the immenseness of this massive, destructive storm. The piece begins with swirling winds and a sense of dread and anticipation. The wind begins to pick up, then pauses briefly as the rain begins to fall in rhythmic raindrops. Soon the rain picks up and is joined with the growing fierce winds, building to a peak. The storm begins to calm, followed with the piano playing the final raindrops as they slow and then stop. The piano plays alone as the skies open up and the sun breaks through at the end. The piece includes a full score, flute 1 & 2, oboe, cello, claves and optional rainstick, and a separate piano part (easier to read). Total of 17 pages.

Jambalaya (On the Bayou) is a song written and recorded by American country music singer Hank Williams that was first released in July 1952. Named for a Creole and Cajun dish, jambalaya, it spawned numerous cover versions and has since achieved popularity in several different music genres.

Since the original melody of the song was from Grand Texas, the song is a staple of Cajun culture. However, although Williams kept a Louisiana theme, the song is not a true cajun song, which helped the song gain widespread popularity:

Ethnic music is usually unpalatable for a mass market unless it is diluted in some way (Harry Belafonte's calypsos, Paul Simon's Graceland… the list is endless). The broader audience related to 'Jambalaya' in a way that it could never relate to a true cajun two-step led by an asthmatic accordion and sung in patois.

The Carpenters featured the song, in an up-tempo pop version with country flourishes, on their 1973 album Now & Then. Their version was released as a single outside the United States in 1974 and sold well in the UK (peaking at number 12 in the charts) and Japan.

Presented here as a brass quintet with up-tempo percussion, there is some resemblance of the Carpenters' cover, but also demands spectacular playing from all the players. Enjoy!

Salangadou is an American Creole or Cajun folk song, ballad, and echo song from the bayous of Louisiana. The sad, melancholy, haunting melody and lyrics relate to the call of a mother who longs for her missing child, Salangadou. This arrangement for late intermediate piano is written in the key of G# Minor, and includes lyrics and solfege syllables.
