The compilation in this album includes works for small ensembles, duets for instruments like the clarinet and piano that establish metaphorical dialogs with each other in the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, as well as in the fantasia for the same instruments. Later we encounter a watery flow of deliciously fresh notes in the String Trio, a Neo-romantic piece. The album concludes with a Chamber Concert for Piano in three parts that exalts the old and classical manner of writing piano concerts. Bach’s Fantasia & Fugue in C minor, BWV 537 is a work for Organ written around the year 1723 while the composer was in residence in Weimar.  Bach composed many of his greatest organ works during this period. The music of the Fantasia is lush and ornate. The Fugue is an amazing 130 bars in length. This work was transcribed for orchestra in 1921 by Edward Elgar who mourned after the death of his wife. He was to orchestrate the Fugue and Richard Strauss agreed to do the Fantasia, however after two years Elgar completed the entire work as Strauss never held up his part of the bargain. Mr. Sauer has subtly added phrasings, breaths and articulations to the original score to aid in the performance for Trombone choir. The music is about eight minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers.

It is featured in this form on the 2002 Arcady CD A Beckett Miscellany. The instrumentation, as with Baroque chamber music, is flexible. A version of Fantasia also has been made for three instruments. The notation, from the positioning of the notes, passing through the direction of the stems, and reaching legatos that do not cross staves and barlines, seeks to be clear and intuitive. The form is evidenced by the bar numbering placed at the beginning of the main phrases. And the use of double barlines is restricted to section changes, not tonal changes, as in older notations. Dynamics are not structuring and therefore are not prefixed. And each score is preceded by an epigraph that situates the general character of the music, whose tempo is indicated by the name of the Divinity.

Published by Liz Nedela (A0.1363503). Puppetry is an ancient art form in Thailand (formerly, Siam), and there are several types of puppetry. Traditional hun lek puppetry is the type represented in this piece. The large puppets require three people (master puppeteers) to work the puppets and dance in unison on stage.  The puppet shows are accompanied by specific music and narration that tell the story.  The puppets are designed from an ancient art form: Kohn, and are extremely intricate.  The story is of Good Triumphs over Evil and is based on a legend of Ramaikien.  In playing this piece, follow the score instructions carefully, following phrases and no pedal.  This is a different type of music than is normally performed on piano, but try to envision the instruments, the actions of the puppets, the movements of the puppeteers, and the style of music.  There was no piano in ancient Siam, and the music is very unlike any used in traditional Western music.  See YouTube links printed in the structural notes of the score for further education; the mp3 is from computer notation.  There is no recording of the performance.  This piece was written by request of a piano student who wanted to play music from his home country: Thailand.  Please see other pieces in the composer's catalog: Dance of the Lanna, and Sounds of Siam.
