For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry Eternal Bridge was made to be performed by a group of six soloists playing the following instruments: Oboe, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. It is not a difficult piece once learned. It is really a great fun for the players and very easy listening too, It covers a very wide range of audience demands. There is a groove feeling on it that makes it very pleasant to most all people. Because of its plasticity the piece allows many interpretations, therefore I did not made much use of interpretation symbols in order to leave to the performers the freedom of doing their own. Bowing and fingering are left totally virgin at the hands of the schools or the creativity of the performing Artists. P.S. - The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Imagine a little railway station, a train that comes and stops, and your friends go inside. As you step on the little stairs to go inside, the doors close letting you out, and the train starts rolling. It speeds up very fast and enough so you can`t jump out of the little stairs back to the ground, you are holding now to the iron bars around the doors of the train, you see your friends and the people inside but they can`t see you, they can`t hear you, and you notice that the train is now on a bridge so high, that you can`t see the earth any more. Wind is blowing around me and I feel this cosmic cold and everything starts to twist around in a gigantic spiral. I still feel the Gravity but it goes in all directions at the same time pushing me violently and I feared to fail the grip on the iron bars and fall down, in an imaginary endless abyss. Little by little the speed of the events slows down progressively until everything freezes. Now, The other side of the bridge does not exist at all, neither the beginning or up or down. The train disappeared in a glimpse and I noticed that I was not falling down, just hanging there out in hyperspace, Free from Gravity. I lost the fear of falling in the abyss, it felt kind a good, because the only thing that I could see was light, pure beautiful bright white light, I was floating in light, I realised I could stay there forever, but then I felt lonely and wanted to come back home. The middle section falls apart much like my family truly was, behind closed doors. That is: we lived in the same house, but we did not communicate, we did not listen to each other.  Near the end, it becomes much darker, almost funereal, like the truth of what being the youngest child (of a narcissistice mother,  with an older narcissistic sister, a dad who chooses to remain ignorant) in my family was truly like. The various parts represent members of my family , sometimes several parts represent one member, or (at times) one part represents several members. Typically, the flute represents my sister, clarinet represents myself (sometimes tuba and trumpet as well). The parts overlap , to show how we did not listen and spoke at each other rather than with each other. This piece  shows not just what each person was like on the outside, but also shows the more subtle sides of each member that few people really see or know about (the abuse behind closed doors). This piece is multi faceted, multi layered, like the 4 main members of my family are. The very end points to the Grace of God being the only thing that can heal my family at this point. The flute ends higher than clarinet, in the Hope that Healing can truly occur (not just my family, but with other families that hurt as well).

English • German.Belgian cellist Jules de Swert was born on 15.8.1843 in Leuven; he died in Ostend on 24.2.1891. His first cello lessons were with his father in Leuven, then from 1856 to 1858 he studied with Adrien Francois Servais in Brussels. Immediately after completing his studies he embarked on a very successful concert tour across Denmark, Sweden and Germany. He then found employment in Düsseldorf, Weimar – and Berlin, where he was Director of Music at court and teacher at the Academy of Music. In Vienna he was then appointed principal cellist at the Imperial Opera and professor at the Vienna Conservatoire. In 1888 de Sweet returned to Belgium, where besides teaching at Conservatoires in Ghent and Bruges he also worked as a conductor. Despite his busy concert schedule and teaching commitments, Jules de Swert still found time for composition. Alongside original pieces for cello and piano as well as transcriptions (particularly of works by Chopin) he composed two cello concertos, several orchestral works and operas. This transcription of Chopin’s Valse in E minor was published in 1876 (plate no. 22003).

So part of the build in volume happens automagically!There are no page turns. The soundfile alongside the score is from the 3rd verse where you can hear that the sound is becoming busy and powerful. One  performer (or player) sits at Piano I and may also serve as the conductor. At Piano II, Performer 1 plays from the treble  staff and Performer 2 plays from the bass staff. There are possible variations in this, such as having four pianos (two pianos  doubling the other two), or having two performers at Piano I, with Performer 2 playing only the bass-staff rhythmic pattern that  begins in measure 37. A standing conductor (not playing piano) may be desired.  Although repetitive, the music in this sonata rarely repeats itself  exactly; hence, further minor improvisations by the performers are appropriate, keeping with the improvisatory nature of oral  tradition. Program Note (for use in concert programs) by James Siddons  The Sonata Hymnica series by James Siddons consists of piano solos that explore the world of American hymns and  vernacular religious songs in the 1880-1920 era, when rural and small-town churches relied on pianos for music, and, in an age before microphones and amplification, the acoustics of wooden floors, walls, and high ceilings. These sonatas are not hymn arrangements but explorations of the sounds that can be created by a piano in a reverberant environment, all the while keeping in mind the essential message of the familiar words  sung to the various hymn tunes. Sonata Hymnica No. 6 is the first in the series to be for piano ensemble, and the second (after No. 3) to be based on the worship music of the 19th-century African American church. This sixth sonata also explores the singing world of the black congregation and choir as well as the piano. Their singing was shaped  by the sounds and intonations of the piano and the heritage of European music behind it, as well as the contours and cadences of the religious folk songs known as Spirituals. But the black congregations also sang hymns and choruses from the Classical tradition, and the Spirituals became the basis of many adaptations by white arrangers. Thus, we may speak  of  standardized adaptations of Spirituals as white black music, and black performance styles of Classical works as black white music. Piano ragtime music is a non-religious example of white music (the military march) made into black white music by the blending in of the syncopated rag rhythm. Sonata Hymnica No. 6 explores the intermingling of these two strains of American music as heard in the 19th-century black church. In his classic book The Souls of Black Folk (Chicago, 1903), W. E. B. Du Bois confesses to not being a musician but nonetheless finding himself enthralled by the music of the Southern 19th-century African Americans. He refers to their singing as the Frenzy or ‘Shouting,’ when the Spirit of the Lord passed by, and seizing the  devotee, made him mad with supernatural joy . . . stamping, shrieking, and shouting, the rushing to and fro and waving of arms,  the weeping and laughing, the vision and the trance (p. 116). On another page, Du Bois speaks of . . . the songs of my fathers . . . swelling with song, instinct for life, tremendous treble and darkening bass (p. 163). Sonata Hymnica No. 6 uses the African call and response form as well  as percussive polyrhythms.

Although published as a piano solo (1902), A Breeze from Alabama is subtitled March and Two Step and has a  dedication on the cover to P. G. Lowery (Perry George Lowery, 1871-1942), World's  Challenging Colored Cornetist and Band Master. Thus, A Breeze from Alabama may well have been conceived as a march for military band  but published only as a piano solo. No band arrangement by Joplin is known to exist, but Joplin could have done this, as he himself was a  cornetist  as well as pianist, and had played cornet in bands like Lowery's many times.        Drawing on this information, the  present arrangement by James Siddons (2017) is based on the following assumptions: 1. A Breeze from Alabama  originated as a march (in march-trio form) for military band. 2. The 1902 publication is a piano  reduction of that band work. The melodic lines intended for cornet solo are generally discernible in the piano reduction. 3. A setting for piano duet (or  ensemble) keeps this work in the tradition of ragtime piano while also emulating the fulsome  tone colors of brass instruments to a degree that a solo piano cannot do. Thus this  arrangement is not a solo-and-accompaniment setting, but a setting for large ensemble with  soloist. It is collaborative music, akin to a concerto. This piano duet part may be performed by two pianists at one piano, or two  pianists at two pianos, or four pianists at two pianos, or even six pianists at  three pianos, with or without a conductor. The cornet part may be played on trumpet. There are three score or part versions for sale:1. The full score is for use by a conductor or instructor. An audio track (mp3, virtual sounds) is posted here.2. The piano duet (or ensemble) score has the Primo and Secondo parts shown on facing left and right pages as is standard for piano duet music. (No audio recording.)3. The cornet (or trumpet) part is sold separately and has a rehearsal recording posted, in which only the piano duet music is heard. This arrangement features a cadenza for cornet composed by James Siddons. The cadenza is found in measures 115-119 in the score and cornet part. In the rehearsal recording, there is five seconds of silence beginning 2 mins, 44 secs into the audio track. The music resumes at measure 120. To practice with the cadenza, press pause on your media player; to practice without the cadenza, simply wait the silence out.

It is in many respects a symphonic work for flute trio, with the characteristics and order of the four movements resembling the structure of a classical symphony. As a child during the Space Race, I was immensely interested in both terrestrial- and extraterrestrial-exploration, and as I composed this music a half-century later it made the most sense to set the musical ideas in this manner. In the first movement, Black Hole, two contrasting themes are presented and immediately developed: a theme of polyphonic gestures, with a contrasting second theme of chordal-textured music. The characteristic and somewhat liquid sound of the flute trio in the second theme is especially evident. The static and evolving blocks of music represent the gravitational collection of matter by a black hole. The second movement, A Crescent Moon, 1969, celebrates astronaut Neil Armstrong's moonwalk in July 1969. This slow, lyrical movement possesses a nocturnal quality while features the alto flute as a solo instrument. The third movement, SETI Radio (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), is a slow through-composed scherzo. With piccolo, a high tessitura of the flute trio range is heard. The fourth movement is a dynamic Rondo Variations form.
