Clarinet Duet Clarinet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552347 Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann 1681-1767. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Instructional,Standards,Wedding. 2 scores. 21 pages. Jmsgu3 #6329817. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552347). I. Dolce II. Allegro III. Largo IV. VivaceGeorg Philipp Telemann's Sonatas Op. 2, also known as the Six Sonatas for two flutes (or violins), are significant for several reasons. First, they are dedicated to two young music lovers, explicitly appealing to a circle of pupils and music enthusiasts. The pieces foster the ability of musical expression and are characterized by a combination of expansive baroque thematic material and charming galant features in the slow and fast movements, respectively. Telemann was considered one of the leading German composers of his time, and his works, including the Sonatas Op. 2, reflect his significant contribution to the Baroque music era. The Methodical nature of these sonatas, as described when they were published in 1732, is also noteworthy, as they included a second, ornamented version of the simple melodies, showcasing Telemann's innovative approach to composition.  Furthermore, Telemann's music, which incorporates French, Italian, and German national styles, remained highly regarded by colleagues and critics alike during his lifetime and the latter half of the 18th century. Numerous theorists and prominent composers cited his works as models, and he influenced pupils of J.S. Bach in Leipzig, such as Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. Therefore, Telemann's Sonatas Op. 2 contributed to the expansion of domestic music-making and influenced other composers and musicians of his time and beyond.

Cornet,Horn,Trombone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1347457 Composed by Philippe De Vitry. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Early Music,Historic,Instructional,Traditional. 15 pages. Jmsgu3 #932258. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1347457). Philippe de Vitry's Garrit gallus/In nova fert is significant in its historical and musical importance. Composed around 1315, it is one of the earlier works of the Ars Nova, marking a stylistic change in medieval music. The motet is complex, using multiple texts sung simultaneously, isorhythm, and unusual harmonies, which required a new notational system of red ink coloration to indicate the duple. The motet's text is drawn from the opening lines in the two top voices, and it is suggested that it makes a statement about the exile of French Christians, similar to the Jews from their homeland in the Old Testament, and the corrupt leadership at the time. It may make a strong political statement about the corrupt leadership at the time, as it is part of the Roman de Fauvel. This animal fable satirizes the political situation in Paris.Philippe de Vitry, a French composer-poet, bishop, and music theorist, is known for his significant contributions to late medieval music. In the last decade of his life, from 1351 to 1361, he served as the Bishop of Meaux, near Paris. This appointment was the crowning event of his court and church career. As a bishop, Vitry's accomplishments were primarily in the musical and literary domains. He was an innovative and influential composer, widely acknowledged as a leading musician of his day, and his treatise Ars Nova became a rallying cry for all modern composers after about 1320. Additionally, he was known for his French poetry set to music, creating a new style of song, anticipating the work of Guillaume de Machaut. While his tenure as a bishop was relatively short, his lasting impact was in music and poetry.

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1300432 Composed by Claude Debussy. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 20th Century,Contest,Festival,Film/TV,Multicultural,Standards,World. Score and Parts. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #890087. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1300432). Berceuse Heroique is a musical composition by Claude Debussy, composed in 1914 as a homage to King Albert I from Belgium and his soldiers. The piece was written for King Albert's Book, a collection of music sponsored by The Telegraph and put together by Hall Caine to raise funds for Belgian war relief. The work opens very dark and somber, with a sense of mourning and loss. The anthem is quoted in the middle of the piece, surrounded by music of gloom and despair. The quote from the Belgian national anthem that is squeezed into Debussy's Berceuse heroique is the first phrase of La Brabançonne by François van Campenhout. The composition expresses the misery of feeling powerless in events, combined with everyday unhappy shortages of necessities, which was a common experience during World War I. The life of French composer Claude Debussy was full of agony and challenges, from surviving in the 1st World War to his battle with cancer.Berceuse heroique is a significant piece in music history for its reflection of the somber and melancholic mood of the time, its tribute to the soldiers and their suffering, and its representation of Debussy's work during the war. The piece is still performed and recorded today, and is considered a significant work in Debussy's oeuvre.

John Bull was an English composer, organist, virginalist, and organ builder who lived from 1562/63 to 1628. Choral Choir,Choral (SSA) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.890639 Composed by Stella ter Hart. Arranged by Stella ter Hart. 20th Century,Folk,Standards. 12 pages. Stella ter Hart #3455153. Published by Stella ter Hart (A0.890639). This hauntingly beautiful and artistic arrangement of She's Like the Swallow contains the original, very old Newfoundland folk text very rarely used due to it's tragic story line. It is in the genre of beware the uncaring man common in folk songs of Europe which served to teach and warn young girls about the dangers of infatuation.  This genre travelled to the United States and Canada in the 1700's. The expression apron low/apron high is a common thread in this genre and refers to being pregnant.  She's Like the Swallow tells the tragic tale of a young girl who has fallen in love with, no doubt, a handsome but uncaring man.  The story is told from each character's perspective plus an observer (narrator).  The girl ultimately creates her own funeral bower of rose petals (ripping them off in desperation as she frantically runs through a garden), lies down on this 'bed of roses' and dies.  You have probably heard this song many times without ever knowing the true meaning due to significant verses left out. You will need a skilled accompanist!  The accompaniment utilizes significant word painting throughout to highlight the haunting melody line. Word painting depicts the swallow, uncaring cruelty, desperation, blindly going in circles, anger, church bells and fading away/dying.  The conductor is free to take liberties with the tempi and dynamics in order to create a unique interpretation that will resonate with their own choral group. This arrangement of She's Like the Swallow is an exceptional festival or competition piece and one that should be in the repertoire of every skilled women's choir! Duration:  4 minutes                                                                                                                                                             Key: C minor (plus modulations)                                                                                                                                                                      Level: intermediate/early advanced composer contact:  www.stellaterhart.com

Cello,Instrumental Duet,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1358142 Composed by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Instructional. 5 pages. Jmsgu3 #942629. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1358142). The Prelude of 1896 refers to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's revisions to Modest Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov. Rimsky-Korsakov made significant alterations to the opera in 1896 and again in 1908, which were of vast scope and aimed at meeting his rigid academic standards. These revisions, although controversial, played a significant role in the history of the opera's performances. Rimsky-Korsakov was a prominent figure in Russian society and culture, known for his influence on musical education and for developing a Russian national identity.

Organ - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549915 Composed by James M. Guthrie. Contemporary,Instructional. Score. 3 pages. Jmsgu3 #3911787. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549915). In Nomine: A prelude to the St Luke Organ Book (by Daniel Pinkham) for one single organ manual. Subtitled The Little Time Machine, the composition features one iteration of the In Nomine cantus firmus. As the piece progresses, the cantus is treated in medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, classical, romantic, and modern styles. I performed this piece just before the world premiere of Daniel Pinkham's St. Luke Organ Book in 2006.The history of In Nomine is rooted in its origin as a type of contrapuntal instrumental composition by 16th-century English composers, usually for a consort of viols, lute, or keyboard, based on a version of a piece of plainchant. The name In Nomine was adopted for this type of piece after the English composer John Taverner composed an instrumental piece based on the plainchant Gloria Tibi Trinitas to which he set the words In nomine Domini in his Gloria Tibi Trinitas six-voice Mass. Over the next 150 years, English composers worked this melody into In Nomine pieces of ever more fantastic stylistic range. This set a fashion, and several 20th-century composers, such as Peter Maxwell Davies and Roger Smalley, have quoted In Nomines in their works. The In Nomine played a significant role in developing English polyphony. It is a title given to many pieces of English polyphonic, predominantly instrumental music, first composed during the 16th century. The In Nomine was the chief means by which the grand tradition of vocal polyphony was brought to bear on the evolution of instrumental music in England. The In Nomine is considered the most conspicuous single form in the early development of English consort music and is significant in the genesis of chamber music in England. It marked the first time a specific instrumental style was formed, and it influenced the development of English polyphony by bringing the tradition of vocal polyphony into the realm of instrumental music.Despite various attempts by scholars to elucidate its almost legendary origin, the mystery of the origin of the In Nomine remains unsolved.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.553661 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Classical,Holiday,Wedding. 37 pages. RayThompsonMusic #3466544. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553661). The String Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 4, was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1795. It was adapted from his Octet in E-flat major, Op. 103, which, despite its high opus number, was in fact composed by Beethoven in 1792/1793 but was published only in 1837, ten years after the composer's death. The Quintet was published in Vienna in 1796.The quintet has been viewed as a mere transcription of the octet. However, there are a few differences between the two works. In the first movement, there are significant changes in the exposition and substantial ones in the development, reprise, and ending. The ensuing Andante employs new themes and involves significant changes in the ones retained. The Scherzo and finale are also substantially different: among other alterations, a second trio was added to the former and a new alternate theme was inserted in the latter. This arrangement is for wind quintet. (Horn in Eb) but horn in F also provided.
