Their only solace is the promise that their brittle fingers will hold future offspring; new leaves will take their places in the spring. They send up a desperate plea for renewal of life and an early spring, but in the next thought concede that winter must first be endured before such renewal can begin.The piece opens with a desolate passage for unaccompanied cello, setting the tone of a gloomy autumnal scene.
