In questo libro vi presento la mia composizione dal titolo Litania per pianoforte e voce recitante, ispirata alle poesie di Pier Paolo Pasolini. Centodue anni sono trascorsi dalla sua nascita, quarantanove dal suo assassinio, eppure le parole di Pasolini vibrano ancora, hanno risonanza come un grido di battaglia che avremmo dovuto raccogliere per fronteggiare il declino, anziché trattarlo come un visionario jettatore. Non l’unico fra i migliori del Novecento, ma sicuramente colui che più di tutti ha investito il suo corpo, la carne, il sangue per ogni parola. Nel 1958 pubblicò una raccolta di liriche intitolata L’usignolo della Chiesa Cattolica, in cui esprimeva il suo amore e il suo conflitto con la religione, la cultura e la storia del suo paese. Tra queste liriche, otto sono dedicate alla figura di Maria, la madre di Gesù, e sono chiamate Litania. Una litania è una preghiera in cui si invoca una serie di nomi o attributi di una divinità o di un santo, con una formula di supplica o di lode. Pasolini usa questo genere per esplorare i diversi aspetti di Maria, da quelli più tradizionali a quelli più personali e provocatori. Ho voluto trasporre queste poesie in musica, creando otto brani per pianoforte e voce recitante. Queste composizioni vogliono mettere in musica la rabbia dell’intellettuale, spogliata dalle forme e dalle regole delle arti, andando alla riscoperta di quella scrittura diretta, caustica, spesso indisponente, con cui Pasolini raccontava la realtà e l’attualità del suo tempo. Ogni brano corrisponde a una litania, e ne riprende il titolo e il testo. Il mio intento è stato quello di creare un dialogo tra la parola e il suono, tra la voce umana e quella del pianoforte, tra il senso e il sentimento. Ho cercato di rispettare il ritmo, la musicalità e il significato dei versi di Pasolini, ma anche di aggiungere la mia interpretazione e la mia emozione. Ho usato vari stili e tecniche musicali, da quelle più classiche a quelle più moderne, per esprimere la ricchezza e la complessità della visione pasoliniana.

Grabado con la voz de la célebre cantante de San Bernardo, Cundinamarca y criada en Icononzo, Tolima: Matilde Díaz y acompañado por la orquesta del propio compositor. Cumbiamba: Cumbia es apocope (Pérdida de una o varias letras al final de una palabra) de cumbiamba, este término tiene relación con la voz antillana cumbancha que en Cuba se significa jolgorio o parranda, ambas se deriva de la voz negra cumbe, baile negro de la Guinea continental española o kumba palabra que según el antropólogo Fernando Ortiz significa hacer ruido. La Cumbia tiene su dominio en todo la costa norte de Colombia, partiendo de Cartagena, donde se supone tiene su nacimiento aunque en El Banco, Plato, Mompox y Cienaga, también reclaman ese derecho. Esta danza tradicional se extendió por todo el departamento de Bolívar para seguir a Sucre, Córdoba, Cesar, Atlántico y Magdalena. Generalmente se confunde cumbia con cumbiamba pero en la practica son dos cosas diferentes, ya que cumbiamba se refiere al festival o lugar donde se baila, no solo cumbia; si no otros ritmos como bullerengue, mapalé, porro, etc. También se le llama cumbiamba a las comparsas que bailan cumbia en los carnavales de Barranquilla. En el Magdalena también se le dice así a la reunión de bailadores de cumbia, en tanto es la tonada musical y coreográfica, aire típico predominante en todo el litoral atlántico. There is a short break in between the two movements via a fermata to allow the quartet to transition into the Dance from the Prelude. Program Notes: The slow and passionate opening of the Prelude gives way to a more melancholic melody, passed around the quartet by the violins and cello. A new, more hopeful and animated melody is introduced by the violin and viola shortly after the first theme, but is cut short by the sudden introduction of a short and more subtle transition, led by the violin, viola, and cello, which then leads into a yearning melody. The melody is passed back and forth between the violin and viola in a call and response gesture, as if the viola and violin are having a romantic conversation with each other. The dreamy melody slowly fades into a peaceful moment of silence and a resolution between the violin and viola, signaling the end of the Prelude. Suddenly, a lighthearted and spirited violin melody is introduced, leading into the Dance. The melody by the violin is passed around the quartet by the violins and viola, eventually leading to the climax of the Dance. A determined and more driving melody is passed around through the quartet, led by the violins and cello, which then gives way to a shorter, but slower and more delicate theme, led by the cello. The theme quickly resolves into another peaceful and resolute moment of silence as the Dance comes to an end, signaling the end of the performance.

Sinfonietta                                                                                                                  composed by Dan Heslink Sinfonietta is a trio for vibraphone, marimba and percussion (xylophone, snare drum, and bass drum). Its expression is intended to be non-representational, presenting only an interesting technical construction in a suave formal organization. With the title the composer designates a single movement, with length and seriousness of expression approaching a symphonic movement. Its form approximates an expanded version of the classical sonata-allegro, dividing materials into three large sections. Beginning are the two main phrases of the principal theme, which establish patterns that are idiomatic throughout the movement. The first measure’s quartal harmonies divide into rhythms alternating the two hands, the right-hand posing a melody and the left-hand complementing it with harmony and rhythmic repetition. The phrase at measure 7 is a long-breathed melody for vibes accompanied by undulating chords in the marimba. A transition comprising highly qualitative rhythms (stated first by the marimba in m. 20.) has much identity. By measure 41, the transition has grown into a full secondary theme, one that is developed and repeated often throughout the movement. The exposition closes with a theme beginning in measure 51. It is announced by the vibes as another long-breathed melody unfolding over the active rhythm of the second theme. After a gradual dissipation, the development section starts at measure 92 with a new but related theme, heard first in the vibes. It offers a different key and an expressive melody slowly unfolding over rhythmically active harmonies. The remainder of this middle section explores nuances of the secondary and closing themes, and ultimately leads to the movement’s first climax. It eventually dissipates through a gradual reduction of density and tempo.  The Reprise begins vigorously at m. 118 with statements of both the principal theme’s phrases. Then the second theme is transformed by the addition of bass drum strokes, which sets up a codetta. This section comprises a long crescendo on the new theme over a rhythmic tattoo derived from the second theme, and builds to a bold conclusion.  Pedaling on the vibes is indicated with a solid bracket below the connected notes, and half pedaling with a dashed bracket. It is imperative that the percussion part be heard but not dominate. The performer is encouraged to experiment with a piccolo snare drum and 28 bass drum. Sinfonietta would serve equally well in a professional, college or advanced high school percussion recital. The composer assigns a difficulty level of medium difficult. Duration is 8:10. This musical depiction begins with a stately procession in which the racers are introduced to the audience (the harmonic progression is based loosely on Pachelbel’s Canon). As we near the start of the race, the energy intensifies with arpeggiations; requiring dexterity and coordination. A rhythmically charged left-hand ostinato signifies the beginning of the race, and our pulse intensifies. A modulation raising the theme by a half-step signifies the racers maneuvering around a turn in the track. We hit the final lap with a race to the finish line that leaves the performer and audience breathless!
