String Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552333 Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann 1681-1767. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Instructional,Standards,Wedding. 31 pages. Jmsgu3 #6327363. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552333). I. Largo II. Allegro III. Affettuoso IV. VivaceGeorg Philipp Telemann's Sonatas Op. 2, also known as the Six Sonatas for two flutes (or violins), are significant for several reasons. First, they are dedicated to two young music lovers, explicitly appealing to a circle of pupils and music enthusiasts. The pieces foster the ability of musical expression and are characterized by a combination of expansive baroque thematic material and charming galant features in the slow and fast movements, respectively. Telemann was considered one of the leading German composers of his time, and his works, including the Sonatas Op. 2, reflect his significant contribution to the Baroque music era. The Methodical nature of these sonatas, as described when they were published in 1732, is also noteworthy, as they included a second, ornamented version of the simple melodies, showcasing Telemann's innovative approach to composition.Furthermore, Telemann's music, which incorporates French, Italian, and German national styles, remained highly regarded by colleagues and critics alike during his lifetime and the latter half of the 18th century. Numerous theorists and prominent composers cited his works as models, and he influenced pupils of J.S. Bach in Leipzig, such as Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. Therefore, Telemann's Sonatas Op. 2 contributed to the expansion of domestic music-making and influenced other composers and musicians of his time and beyond.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.553661 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Classical,Holiday,Wedding. 37 pages. RayThompsonMusic #3466544. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553661). The String Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 4, was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1795. It was adapted from his Octet in E-flat major, Op. 103, which, despite its high opus number, was in fact composed by Beethoven in 1792/1793 but was published only in 1837, ten years after the composer's death. The Quintet was published in Vienna in 1796.The quintet has been viewed as a mere transcription of the octet. However, there are a few differences between the two works. In the first movement, there are significant changes in the exposition and substantial ones in the development, reprise, and ending. The ensuing Andante employs new themes and involves significant changes in the ones retained. The Scherzo and finale are also substantially different: among other alterations, a second trio was added to the former and a new alternate theme was inserted in the latter. This arrangement is for wind quintet. (Horn in Eb) but horn in F also provided.

Score and Parts. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #890087. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1300432). Berceuse Heroique is a musical composition by Claude Debussy, composed in 1914 as a homage to King Albert I from Belgium and his soldiers. The piece was written for King Albert's Book, a collection of music sponsored by The Telegraph and put together by Hall Caine to raise funds for Belgian war relief. The work opens very dark and somber, with a sense of mourning and loss. The anthem is quoted in the middle of the piece, surrounded by music of gloom and despair. The quote from the Belgian national anthem that is squeezed into Debussy's Berceuse heroique is the first phrase of La Brabançonne by François van Campenhout. The composition expresses the misery of feeling powerless in events, combined with everyday unhappy shortages of necessities, which was a common experience during World War I. The life of French composer Claude Debussy was full of agony and challenges, from surviving in the 1st World War to his battle with cancer.Berceuse heroique is a significant piece in music history for its reflection of the somber and melancholic mood of the time, its tribute to the soldiers and their suffering, and its representation of Debussy's work during the war. The piece is still performed and recorded today, and is considered a significant work in Debussy's oeuvre.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1147810 Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Contest,Festival,Romantic Period,Standards,Thriller. 129 pages. Jmsgu3 #747963. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1147810). Composed in 1867, Mussorgskyâ??s Night on Bald Mountain is a tone poem inspired by the Russian legend of nocturnal revels on St. John's Night, involving a witches' Sabbath on Bald Mountain near Kiev. The piece is known for its high drama, dark textures, and bold harmonies, which Mussorgsky's colleagues considered excitingly expressive and raw. The work was unpublished and unrevised at the time of the composer's death, and his colleagues, including Rimsky-Korsakov, later revised it. The composition remains a powerful representation of Russian folk tradition. It is associated with the pagan festivities of the midsummer Slavic holiday, making it a significant piece in the history of Russian classical music. The legend of the nocturnal revels on St. John's Night in June on a hill called Lysa Hora near Kiev is a prominent Slavic tale that inspired Modest Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain. The legend tells of a demon, Chernobog, who leads the revels until a far-off church bell sounds disperse the Spirits of Darkness. This tale is associated with the pagan festivities of the midsummer Slavic holiday and is a significant part of Russian folklore and culture. Lysa Hora, meaning Bald Mountain or Barren Mountain, is a large wooded hill in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, near the confluence of the Dnipro and Lybid' rivers, and is the traditional site of the witch gatherings in Slavic folklore. The legend's themes of darkness, supernatural gatherings, and the triumph of light have made it a compelling source of inspiration for various artistic works, including Mussorgsky's musical composition.

Cornet,Horn,Trombone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1347457 Composed by Philippe De Vitry. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Early Music,Historic,Instructional,Traditional. 15 pages. Jmsgu3 #932258. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1347457). Philippe de Vitry's Garrit gallus/In nova fert is significant in its historical and musical importance. Composed around 1315, it is one of the earlier works of the Ars Nova, marking a stylistic change in medieval music. The motet is complex, using multiple texts sung simultaneously, isorhythm, and unusual harmonies, which required a new notational system of red ink coloration to indicate the duple. The motet's text is drawn from the opening lines in the two top voices, and it is suggested that it makes a statement about the exile of French Christians, similar to the Jews from their homeland in the Old Testament, and the corrupt leadership at the time. It may make a strong political statement about the corrupt leadership at the time, as it is part of the Roman de Fauvel. This animal fable satirizes the political situation in Paris.Philippe de Vitry, a French composer-poet, bishop, and music theorist, is known for his significant contributions to late medieval music. In the last decade of his life, from 1351 to 1361, he served as the Bishop of Meaux, near Paris. This appointment was the crowning event of his court and church career. As a bishop, Vitry's accomplishments were primarily in the musical and literary domains. He was an innovative and influential composer, widely acknowledged as a leading musician of his day, and his treatise Ars Nova became a rallying cry for all modern composers after about 1320. Additionally, he was known for his French poetry set to music, creating a new style of song, anticipating the work of Guillaume de Machaut. While his tenure as a bishop was relatively short, his lasting impact was in music and poetry.
