The Long Black Veil is a country ballad written in 1959 by songwriters Danny Dill (1924-2008) and The Den Mother of Music Row, Marijohn Wilkin (1920-2006).  It’s been covered by a plethora of artists from Johnny Cash to Mick Jagger (accompanied by The Chieftains), but arguably the most well-known version was recorded by country music legend Lefty Frizzell.  It was selected by the Library of Congress in 2019 for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.  Frizzell’s version moves at the shuffling clip-clop of a horse’s hooves-as is the style of his genre-but I wanted to turn it into something that soars a bit more; something that frames the faceless, mourning woman standing in a bracing wind.

The International School of Stavanger lies only one kilometer from a small fjord called Hafrsfjord where a monument, Swords in Stone, was constructed consisting of three large bronze swords stuck in an outcropping on the shore. The monument commemorates a battle which unified the Viking tribes of Norway under one king, Harald HAY=rfagre, or Harald the Fairhaired. According to legend, in 872 Harald invited the other tribal leaders to a meeting, then had his boats cut off their retreat and they battled until the other leaders submitted to Harald's rule. Harald then became the first king of Norway. The Swords of Stavanger seeks to provide a musical backdrop to this legend of Viking heroism and conquest. Korean Lament This music, “Korean Lament� composed by “Nanpa Hong�(1898-1942), has historical significance as the first violin piece to be composed in Korea using Western usage. It was composed around 1924, published by the “Yeonakhae� in 1926, and recorded as a record in 1936, becoming the epitome of Korean violin music. It was first performed by “Nan-pa Hong� himself in 1932, and appeared as an important piece at each of his concerts. At that time, in an era of oppression during the Japanese colonial period, the title of “Korean Lament� contains a symbolic meaning of patriotism. It is in the form of two parts, that is, AB, with the first half in 4/4 time and the second half in 6/8 time. Since the composer was a violinist himself, his performance and technical ability were of great interest to the social atmosphere of the time. The original piece is a short music for violin and piano, but it was reborn as a work that added Han-Ki Kim’s musical language for a concert at the “Yonsei 100th Anniversary Memorial Hall� to commemorate “Nan-pa Hong� on December 26-27, 2022.
