The title Blast emerged from a confluence of meanings and personal reflections. It alludes to the fundamental act of blowing into wind instruments, forming the essence of this quintet. This direct, physical engagement with the instruments creates a visceral connection between the musicians and their art, mirroring the intimate connection I strive to maintain with my creative process. However, the title also carries a deeper, more poignant significance. Living in Tel Aviv, I am constantly reminded of the harsh realities of conflict, where the sounds of blasts are a grim reminder of the ongoing strife in our region. As someone who deeply opposes war and champions human rights and peace, Blast is my artistic response to these troubling times. It is an expression of my longing for a world where the creative and life-affirming act of making music can overpower the destructive sounds of conflict.

This piece, written for them in 2015, was inspired by those experiences and integrates spirituals that had special significance to me during my time in EOJ. There are quotations from Over My Head; Bye and Bye; My Lord, What a Morning; Great Day; and Oh, Freedom. During the climax of the piece, these spirituals combine into a moving tapestry of half-forgotten songs. As with most of my music, there is a numerological Easter Egg, a hidden message in the structure of the piece itself, for those music theorists who like deep diving into pieces they are singing. The music is composed by Carl M. Steubing and the words are from a poem written by Carl’s good friend Miles J. Martin.  The opening lyrics, “Who is that man�, refers to an older Asian gentleman Miles encountered during vacation in the Far East. They were strangers that could not communicate, but when their eyes met they smiled at each other, and Miles recognized the man as his brother.  Shortly thereafter Miles sat down and wrote the poem called “Brothers�. Carl M. Steubing wrote the music, and it was published in 1967. This song was very relevant back in 1967 but has even more significance today. Brothers (and sisters) around the world are looking to belong in our chaotic world.
