Sequentia Serpentigena. Composed by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Op. 285. Duration 17 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6912. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6912).

The Sonata, in six movements, is the direct outcome of Peter Maxwell Davies’ encounter with the ‘pievi’ – early medieval rural churches – of Tuscany. He writes: ‘In particular, it was inspired by the elusive and enigmatic nature of the imagery of their stone carvings. I have concentrated on just one image, that of the snake, which in Jewish and Christian tradition is a symbol of temptation and betrayal, and of sinfulness in general. However, in the pievi, older significances, which can be traced back to Estruscan times, can be discerned, and these meanings, quite contrary to the usual readings, are now beginning to be fathomed, helping us to understand for instance why the piece of San Vito in Corsignano has no stone carving apart from decorative elements, and that of small, extended snakes.’ (Peter Maxwell Davies)

Reflections on the life and work of Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907). Composed by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. This edition: study score. Music Of Our Time. Downloadable, study score. Op. 276. Duration 30 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q19897. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19897).

Maxwell Davies’ 'Das Rauschende der Farbe' (The Sound of Colour) is a reflection on the life and work of the German artist Paula Modersohn-Becker who died aged 31 in 1907. Maxwell Davies first got to know the artist’s work whilst on a school exchange in Hamburg in 1951 and the composer has since written that Modersohn-Becker’s work has influenced the way that he views the relationship between art and the landscape in which it is produced. This is a particularly significant statement for a composer whose music is often a response to the land and seascape of his adopted home in the Orkney Isles. Commissioned by the Bremer Philharmoniker and first performed by them in 2007, the 30 minute orchestral work in three movements is one of the key works by Maxwell Davies in recent years.

Opening simply with a solo voice, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' Italian settings of eight poems by Renaissance artist Michelangelo for baritone and piano take both the performers and audience on a striking journey through Michelangelo’s tortured and knotty Tuscan poetry. The piano is introduced in the second of the eight settings punctuating the vocal part with a variety of different textures from bell-like figuration to turbulent virtuosity.

The two nocturnes were composed immediately after major surgery, against a deadline, and, despite the music sounding unlike anything I have written before, I decided to keep them exactly as they turned out.2010 is a Chopin year, and I made this pair of nocturnes into a little tribute, after playing through and listening to most of his output. Never before had I composed under these drugged conditions – the musical dimensions were enormously exaggerated, with each interval and each phrase being elongated out of all proportion, and the whole few minutes filling the whole of time and space. The orchestration, for piano quartet, was influenced by the very neo-classical feel of the chamber version of the concertos, and the harmonic language very much the result of pondering Chopin’s very individual take on J.S Bach. They are dedicated to James MacMillan and Amelia Freedman respectively.Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (2010).

Peter Maxwell Davies was thinking of individual and communal vulnerability when composing this piece, especially in relation to the problem of climate change and his home in the Orkney Islands, which is under threat from rising sea levels. However, this theme is not a completely negative one: Davies claims we must all enter the last door of light but the journey is full of light and joy. The melody at the start of the work, which Davies composed in the ‘70’s and never used, could be an Island folk melody and is subject to constant transformation throughout the piece before reaching apotheosis at the end.

Italian.

In his 80th year, Peter Maxwell Davies returns in music to Rome, where he studied with Goffredo Petrassi in the late 1950’s. Full of darkly glowing sonorities (recalling the earlier Roma, Amor of 1998) and often in a language of startling harmonic directness, the Symphony sets Leopardi’s sonnet A se stesso, Borromini’s last testament and an anonymous sonnet which attacks Borromini’s work for its ‘eccentricity’ and ‘lack of coherence’. Davies has composed a deeply moving meditation on the nature of creativity, the artist’s relationship with the past and, ultimately, mortality. Chris Austin.
