Sound Visions 2 for 4 Trombones is a composition by the Dresden author, musicologist and composer Friedbert Streller (born December 21, 1931 in Hohburg near Wurzen; † December 24, 2017 in Dresden). In addition to his musicological activities and teaching at the Dresden Music Academy Carl Maria von Weber, Friedbert Streller also devoted himself to composition throughout his life. The piece, composed in 2011, was premiered posthumously at his memorial service at the Dresden Tolkewitz cemetery by Tobias Hasselt, of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, Eckhard Wiegräbe and Uwe Gebel, of the MDR Symphony Orchestra, and Jörg Richter, of the Elbland Philharmonic. The making of separate parts was dispensed with. Due to the complex nature of the interplay of the individual parts, it makes sense to make music from the score. Although not expressly prescribed by the composer, the use of an alto trombone is strongly recommended for performing the 1st part! Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece.  Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, national pep. The Tag Blues is a theme from RIB that is used as connective tissue throughout the piece. It is most famously stated in the bass clarinet.  It is know as the the Good Evening Friends theme.  In this arrangement, it is lifted from RIB and presented as a stand-alone blues tune.  There is a solo for piano and tenor sax, but any member of the band could step in and solo on its simple blues changes.  Difficulty level is intermediate and certainly playable by most high school jazz ensembles.  Lead Tpt G5.

In all fields of life, new findings are attained by science and research, more and more can be explained, a well-founded understanding of the things around is going to be achieved. However, the mysterious will still persist. Every new perception leads to further questions, new secrets are rising for being explored. Moreover, someone might perceive that in relation to the entire knowledge gained by mankind, the individual is shrinking. Thus, until the end of time the world will stay mysterious - the world seems to be a persistent secret, that wants to be discovered at all times anew.The musical motif of the Question begins with the very first sound of the piece - a dissonance that is harmoniously resolved again. This motif reflects the curiosity that lies dormant in all people. The dissonance creates a tension that can be seen as an impetus for the search for answers. The resolution to a major chord describes the confidence of being able to find an answer to the question. This musical motif runs through the entire work, both in the dreamy bliss of being and in the dramatic passages in which the flood of questions seems to become frightening. In such sections, the dissonance is turning into a minor chord. At the dramatic climax, a tense dominant seventh chord leads to the resolution to major, which finally describes the euphoria after the answer of a very difficult question. After a further phase of relaxation, the gaze wanders over nature in all its glory. Until towards the end of the piece, the awareness finally sets in that every answer found raises a new question and thus the mystery remains forever.The PDF contains the score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. The second guitar part requires the 6th string to be tuned down to D and there are a couple of chords that require three fingers to be placed simultaneously, but there are lots of open strings throughout the piece that help improve the sustain and flow. The bottom D provides real depth to this piece and the sound is full and lush for minimal effort. Both will be familiar to many guitarists as they have featured over the years in a number of Graded Examinations.The countermelody is a new addition, which I originally wrote for flute, so that the piece slotted seamlessly into the background music I played with my flute partner at a friend’s wedding.The Tanz is often mistakenly translated as Dance of the Washerwoman, and it’s also known as Wascha Mesa. The Hupfauf is a companion piece, set in a different rhythm but with ostensibly the same harmonic structure (apart from the Tanz’s Coda which is absent from the Hupfauf).Each dance has two beats in the bar, and the two dances can flow into each other or can be played with a short break. When they run into each other, it makes sense to maintain the two-beat pulse, but if this makes the Hupfauf stressful to play, one can maintain instead the value of the half note (minim), so that the Hupfauf proceeds at a more modest pace.You can play the whole piece (each player plays tune and countermelody in turn), or you can shorten the piece by omitting the sections starting at A and B, which also makes the piece ideal for a mixed ability duo, as one player keeps the tune and one keeps the countermelody.Feel free to add dynamics, a little more articulation and possibly some tone color changes.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
