Oh Dear, Look at the Time, for the late elementary student, is a piece which teaches that time signatures can change frequently in a piece of music.  Time's quick tempo and unusual melody, with beat one accents coming when unexpected due to the changing time signatures, make it an unorthodox piece, but a piece which receives high marks from my students.  A double dotted whole note at the end foreshadows a more advanced concept of notation.  In the first measures, the composer reminds students that all B's are played as flats, then students must remember the time signature.  Over the years, my students have continuously commented on how much they have enjoyed the work, especially the B section.  I know your students will love it too!  .

Procession in D Minor (for 4 Pianos and 8 Hands) was composed to honor those victims of gun violence. As the title implies, it is like a funeral procession. Although there is an undeniable sadness to it, that sadness is musically framed with boldness and courageousness, building continuously to its climactic end symbolizing our honor and tribute to the fallen, and that their memories and our love for them will never be forgotten.

This exciting work for beginning band uses a technique in which primary themes begin on a unison note, and then move stepwise away and back while the other voices remain static or proceed in contrapuntal inversion. This creates chords that expand and contract almost continuously beneath the melody. The percussion section plays an important role providing a rhythmic base which enhances the flow and development of the piece from beginning to end.

The Praeludium from Suite No 3 in A minor is originally for unaccompanied Cello solo by Max Reger (1873-1916, written 1914). For this unaccompanied duet arrangement the melody was creatively deconstructed into two parts that continuously interact as if each instrument is finishing the other's thoughts. The harmonies are inspired by the original double stops. The arrangement remains stylistically faithful to Reger's use of constantly shifting dynamics and ever-present expression marks. This 4 1/2 minute work is a worthy challenge for a serious concert or recital. A new approach to this Masterwork of the repertoire. A live performance will be considerably freer and more expressive than the temporary MIDI recording attached. Range - same note range for both parts which is a wide 2 1/2 octaves. 5 page score, 3 pages each part.

Originally intended as the second movement of a sonata (following Dreams of a Somnambulist as the first movement), this work is highly chromatic, as the title indicates. It explores contrapuntal techniques in an intentionally-disorderly manner, as a chaotic counterpart to the often-used description of counterpoint as a conversation. Rather than a conversation, this 'argument' continuously weaves in and out of thematic ideas.
