The yetzer hara is controlled and restrained by the “yetzer hatov,” or the inclination to do good things and commit acts of kindness. Rabbinic teachings emphasize the importance of both inclinations – without the yetzer hara, people would have no sense of motivation or purpose to their actions, but the yetzer hatov is necessary to ensure that those actions do not harm others. Thus, the two inclinations depend on each other for balance.This teaching resonates with me very personally, as someone who was prone to fits of anger while I was growing up. My adolescent years tested me as I struggled to keep my yetzer hara in check. Even at the time of this piece’s creation, I was struggling with the evil inclination, which was feeding feelings of animosity I had towards people that I believed had wronged me. This is a battle I will fight for the rest of my life, but I believe that balance will come with time and patience. We must all fight to keep our inclinations balanced, so that we are able to mature emotionally as human beings..

Published by Chris Cooke (A0.865253). 50 Favorite Hymns for Solo and Duet Instruments is a sequel to the first book, Hymns for Solo and Duet Instruments.  This second collection contains my all-time favorites and is written for early-mid-intermediate players.  The hymns are written so that instruments can be mixed and matched for duet or ensemble purposes.  Suitable for worship services, they can be played as offertories or special music selections, or as accompaniment to congregational singing.  Many of the hymns are in the traditional hymnal keys, however, there are some that may be slightly lower to accommodate instrumental ranges.  This tuba book contains only the melody of these hymns. In 2016, I wrote half the variations and improvised the remaining ones. By 2019, I was determined to compose the rest so that they could be learned by other organists. I also changed the title to Six Settings for Organ on Amazing Grace because I mostly varied the accompaniments rather than the theme. What sets this work apart from other composers' versions is its key, G-flat major. Although it is rarely used in organ literature, it is a personal favorite key of mine, and I consider it a good challenge for the performing artist. Not only is the key unusual, but I have also incorporated some original idioms including a flutter figure on a light stop against the theme on a chime stop and a mysterious sounding introduction including chromatic scales. Aside from these original ideas, I have borrowed techniques from the works of Dave Brubeck, Chopin and Bach. .

I have composed Harmony for this remembrance concert. What I wished to do in composing this music was to reveal a more Middle Eastern tonality to my style which is derived from American folk fiddle music. As I become more and more familiar with American music in my own musical journey, I also learn that the music I like so much has many layers. It exposes mystery in its origins when one cares to peel back these layers. It is likely these Middle Eastern cultures play more of a role in American fiddling (and American music in general) than previously thought.In Harmony I use descriptive phrases printed in the score to indicate the temperament and journey of the music. Reaching Out begins the piece with its inviting and inquisitive drones. Throughout the piece there are several interpretations of the material with canonic and fugal writing. The music of Harmony is based on the same material constructed in a slow tempo in the beginning, a moderate tempo in the middle of the piece, and a fast fiddling tempo near the end.
