It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. This piece combines the standard text of Ave Maria in English with the text from Proverbs 31 known as Woman of ValorI wrote this piece to venerate Mary and also to venerate all women and their personal strengths.  I consider this Easy to Medium in difficulty, as it has a lot of unison singing and simple four part choral singing.  This would be perfect to use to in a Christmas, Mother's Day, or regular service that highlights contributions of women, and the personal strength necessary to surmount ordeals in life.   The middle melody is taken from the Gregorian Chant Ave Maria but with words from Proverbs.  It should be sung in the style of a legato, light chant, yet with crisp consonants to hear all the words.  I am working on an SSA version of the same piece.  For those who do not have a budget for a harpist, I also have a backing track available with the harp and organ.  The organ is lighter, so an organist could play along and be dominant, and the harp would be heard most.  The harp part is attached score.

True Pluck A number of years ago, the great English guitarist Julian Bream told David Tanenbaum - the dedicatee of tonight's premiere - not to premiere a guitar work unless he knew for a fact it was the composer's second guitar work. Sage advice. The guitar is an instrument that gives up its secrets to a non-guitar playing composer only reluctantly. Indeed, the timbral, digital and chordal subtleties of this most subtle and intimate instrument are truly understood by the guitarist only. Pity the outlander who composes for the guitar for the first time! With this last thought in mind I had, until last fall, managed to avoid writing a guitar piece. However, even the most abject compositional coward will relent when a musician like David Tanenbaum asks for a piece and offers his assistance and critical judgement in its composition. So it was with PLUCK, composed between November of 1995 and January of 1996. Bream's advice notwithstanding, PLUCK is my first guitar piece. Tanenbaum is brave. The title, PLUCK, thus refers to both the action of plucking strings as well as pluck - bravery, grit, true grit. PLUCK is written in six interrelated movements. The first movement, Toccata/Hands of Steel introduces much of the essential pitch and harmonic material of the piece, as well as Flamenco-style rasgueado strumming which, try as I might, I could not resist using. Movement two, Strum/Serenade, explains itself in its title. Movement three, O Tanenbaum (a designation for which David has forgiven me) reprises the Toccata and describes, well, a sort of musical tree (David has forgiven me for this, too). Two-Part Contention is a combatative, argumentative movement that pits the treble strings of the guitar against the bass. Movement 5, John Doe is a lyric and mysterious moment of rest before the manic finale. Movement 6, True Pluck, is a fast, furious and virtuosic finale. PLUCK is dedicated, with greatest respect and affection, to my friend David Tanenbaum. May he only want to play my second guitar piece.

It was composed specifically for guitar, and this copy comes complete with guitar tab as well as traditional notation. I've used an interesting tuning combination for the piece, which is why it also comes with tab, to make everything clearer. Both of the E strings are tuned up by 1 semitone to F, and the B string is de-tuned by 1 semitone to Bb. The resulting sound is pleasant, and unlike most other music out there on the classical guitar market, making it a lovely little piece to learn - and of course to serenade an infant with! It's approximately Grade 4 in standard (ABRSM), so the tuning doesn't make the piece any more difficult to play, and of course, the tab is there to make it crystal clear during the learning process how it is to be played. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did writing it. Christopher Tin is a contemporary composer who is best known for his choral piece called Baba Yetu.  With an impressive educational background in music composition, English literature, and art history, his compositions come to life with like nothing that I've experienced before. It is simply some of the most beautiful and expressive music I have ever heard.  The Lost Birds is a musical memorial to bird species driven to extinction by humans.  Tin’s soundtrack is a fantastic work of art, with its soaring musical phrases that make you feel like you’re flying.  The Saddest Noise is a choral piece, with its lyrics taken from Emily Dickinson’s poem, “The Saddest Noise, the Sweetest Noise,� which talks of the relationship between beauty and grief.  The saddest noise, the sweetest noise, The maddest noise that grows, The birds, they make it in the spring, At night’s delicious close.   Between the March and April line That magical frontier Beyond which summer hesitates, Almost too heavenly near.   It makes us think of all the dead That sauntered with us here, By separation’s sorcery Made cruelly more dear.   It makes us think of what we had, And what we now deplore. We almost wish those siren throats Would go and sing no more.   An ear can break a human heart As quickly as a spear, We wish the ear had not a heart So dangerously near.   The Lost Birds soundtrack was sung by the choral group, Voces8, who made the music and poetry come to life in a way that not many other groups could.  It is simply beautiful.  This arrangement is scored for flute choir – 4 C, alto, bass, and contrabass.  There is an optional cello part that doubles the contrabass.  This is not a strict transcription - I added moving parts and changed/added notes to make it of more interest as an instrumental piece.  I hope you like it.  Duration: 3.5 minutes.

I've created this arrangement to bridge the gap between sounding like the original and being accessible for beginning to intermediate piano players.
