After teaching piano for many years, I've found that students want to play popular songs they like (and why not?!). However, the 'easy piano' music that is available to them is, in fact, usually beyond their capabilities - particularly in the first year or two of lessons. These arrangements are my attempt to remedy that. I will continue to add more titles soon! If you have a suggestion of a title, please let me know!This piece can be played as a solo or with the optional accompaniment part. The piece uses only quarter, half, dotted half and whole notes. The student also keeps their hands in 'Middle C' position (RH/LH first fingers share Middle C). With two exceptions where the RH fifth finger reaches to the A above Middle C, the fingers remain in position.The arrangement is written in 4/4 so that it's easy for the student to count while learning it. However, once they have mastered it, counting in a slower 2/2 may be helpful - it's up to you.

This great old march written before WW1 is not very playable by the average school band. I made a more playable arrangement of it by starting in Eb and going to Ab at the trio instead of the original Db to Gb. I wrote a new countermelody to the first strain that was not so high, took out the grace notes and removed many of the repeats. It is still almost too long, but it is now very playable. The key is the ability to play the dotted 8th 16th and not triplets. Make this very crisp, marcato and separated. Enjoy.

To make this piece more accessible I have arranged it in the key of G Major which is a third below the recorded version which is in B Major. Structure With the repeats and D.S. markings this Lead Sheet will follow the form as heard on the recording.  Melody As with all my arrangements, to try and minimise the number of pages needed, the small note heads in brackets indicate where the melody is different when repeated and these notes should be played/sung on the appropriate verse. The melismatic phrase on boat at the end of bar 37 is a simplification of what is sung on the recording and the performer is free to amend as it suits them. Alternatives. The title was suggested/requested by the musicians who commissioned the piece, who wanted it to tie into the title of the concert, “Triple Clef Presents�, and were quite fond of the ambiguity of the meaning. Is it presents as in multiple gifts, or as in to present? Nobody knows, not even me! This ambiguity had me thinking about other homonyms, and I became very interested in thinking about the present, as in past, present, and future. I felt the best way to be “in the present� musically speaking was through improvisation, and so this piece became based around the idea of the piano laying down a groove with the clarinet and viola getting short, “improvised� melodic lines to play over the groove (each melodic line is written out, but has an improvisatory nature to it). PRESENTS is in three sections; a slow and thoughtful section, a live and energetic “jam session�, and a return to the slower pace with a very introspective vibe.
