My father and mother died a short time later, within months of each other in 2013 and 2014. Finally, in 2017 my 27-year-old nephew died of a drug overdose. This intense period of loss brought and continues to bring about many feelings of regret in addition to so much more. When my nephew died, my son Jonah, developed an intense anxiety about losing us, his parents. I felt compelled to express my feelings, the fear of my own mortality, the anxiety of leaving behind loved ones, combined with words said and unsaid to those lost. “Love letters� is my gift to the six young people I care most about. Published by Spiros Mazis (A0.1027883). Keras, was a musical instrument of ancient Greece. It was an instrument that was created from thehorn of an animal. It consisted of a perforated conical horn from which the bone core was removed and then baked in order to improve its sonority. The sound was produced with direct blow in the hole and the suitable lip technique. In this piece, the horn is treated like an ancient Keras, so, a lot of changes of the pitch are effected entirely by the lips without changing fingerings in order to produces them. Before writing this piece, I researched the possibilities of the horn by comparing intervals to the harmonics and to the fingerings used by the soloist to produce them. I found out that the horn is capable of playing eight or more different microtones, within the space of a whole tone, in certain portions of its range (as shown in the example below). Numbers below the notes are in cents (1/2 step equals 100 cents, octave equals 1200 cents). Above the microtonal notes there are the fingerings that the performer must use in order to produce the specific pitch.

Structure With the repeats and D.S. markings this Lead Sheet will follow the form as heard on the recording.  Melody As with all my arrangements, to try and minimise the number of pages needed, the small note heads in brackets indicate where the melody is different when repeated and these notes should be played/sung on the appropriate verse. The melismatic phrase on boat at the end of bar 37 is a simplification of what is sung on the recording and the performer is free to amend as it suits them. Alternatives. As a vocal major and accompanist during my undergraduate and graduate years, I became familiar with a great number of lieder by Franz Schubert. It's far too difficult to pick a favorite, but this song was one of the first pieces I learned to sing. As common in so many of his songs, Heidenröslein has a very simple, folk-like melody, and the accompaniment almost has the feel of a pianist vamping at the keyboard. My arrangement is very much inspired by the music of George Winston. The right hand has a somewhat ostinato feel in the opening. When the melody enters, the right hand figure is moved into the left hand while the melody floats above as though carried on a summer breeze. The second verse takes on a more music box feel as it makes frequent pauses in the music, but the melody is always present in the right hand, even when it is surrounded by a steady stream of eighth notes.The work closes with a return of the opening material and fragments of the melody tossed back and forth like the falling petals of the rose on the heath.

The final composition of J.S.Bach is surprisingly triumphant, despite his demise just after bar 239. It's also a matter of scholarly conjecture that Bach wrote 'The Art of Fugue' for the keyboard, as some will argue that certain Contrapunctii (?!) are almost impossible to play, bearing in mind that the sustain pedal had yet to be invented. And thus, the most credible path would be that Bach wrote them as A) Academic exercises for study or B) To be played by a suitable ensemble. I'm going with the latter obviously! I include Donald Tovey's conclusion to the work, its brilliance is noted the world over, but surely not what Bach intended, but damn close! This Saxophone version is particularly LOUD!!, so, go make some noise!!

I highly recommend you find a recording of this piano piece to listen to. Don’t try to play Train Ride that fast though! My recording of the bassoon piece is at quarter note at 164. You need not play it that fast. So long as your playing has energy, very solid steady beat, and tongued notes are clear, that will carry the feel of the piece. Time: ca. 2:00-3:00, depending on tempo choiceKey: D minorRange: D2-Eb4I would use this piece with my second or third year students. Younger students should play it on the slower side.
