All of a sudden the meter changes and the moods is smooth and solemn. After a short statement, the meter shifts back to the beginning style and shape- being more active, then moving to more solemnity. A new key takes place and the ensemble shifts to just a solo trumpet. Then, one by one, the other parts add in with more activity in counterpoint. In a slow alle breve the piece begins in a mysterious fashion in octave unisons. Leading into the section where the parts move in a two part counterpoint until it becomes more choral. Then it segues into a solemn mood with a trombone solo carrying the tune with answering sections in the trumpets. With a segment of strength and power and in a block chordal movement the piece continues to settle into solemnity until it concludes to a single pitch.

The text, however, captures a balance between solemnity and celebration, suffering and mercy, death and new life. In adapting it for jazz big band, I found myself thinking about New Orleans jazz funeral parades, which also feature that same odd contradiction between grief and joy, through the use of the blues. I won't claim this is in any way authentic New Orleans jazz, but it does try to say some of the same things, and I hope you enjoy it. Written for standard jazz big band, with lots of room for open solos by the blues-inclined. Roughly 6 minutes, longer with additional solos.
