Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808673).     Brahms composed Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift, his longest composition, during the period, 1865-1868. For the libretto, he eschewed the Latin text of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, using instead verses he chose from the German-language Luther Bible. Thus, it was A German Requiem. The Roman Church’s Requiem Mass begins with prayers for the dead; Brahms, on the other hand, chose to console the living and framed his first movement around the second of the Beatitudes, Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. The first movement is, indeed, comforting, filled with warmth and beauty. This arrangement translates Brahms’ choral parts and orchestral accompaniment into a warm and appealing five-brass-instruments version.     This arrangement was completed in 2017, and performance time runs about 10 minutes, 32 seconds. Manducat Dominum pauper, servus et humilis. Thus Angels' Bread is made the Bread of man today: the Living Bread from heaven with figures dost away: O wondrous gift indeed! the poor and lowly may upon their Lord and Master feed. César Franck’s setting of these words is perhaps the most well known.  This arrangement for 2-part choir makes this wonderful piece accessible to choirs of all abilities. When allocating voices, put higher voices (S/T) on the upper part and lower voices (A/B) on the lower part.

I Will Look After You – Aron Wright This haunting little melody was made famous in the UK by virtue of its use in a TV ad for a well-known bank featuring a black horse and its foal. My arrangement of for four ‘cellos has been written with 3 soloists and a ‘continuo’ in mind. None of the parts go beyond 4th position (with the exception of harmonics), so the challenge is to be found in the musical interpretation & ensemble playing aspects. Some close harmonies make good intonation essential. There is also rhythmic interest in the syncopated vocal line. It is written solely in bass clef and lasts approximately two and a half minutes. Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for ‘cello quartet, quintet and sextet are conceived specifically with the range and technical capabilities of the ‘cello in mind – no simple transpositions or re-orchestrations of string quartet scores. They are therefore both easily playable and enjoyable by any intermediate to advanced ‘cello ensemble. Most parts do not go beyond 4th position, making them equally suitable for student, mixed ability groups or ‘cello choirs. A complete score and set of parts is included.
