Mambo de Maya is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Soprano Saxophones.

This duet is based on the fast, traditional Latin style of Mambo that emerged in Cuba in the 1930s. Later, when Mambo and its dance steps spread to Mexico and New York, hugely successful band leaders like Perez Prado and Tito Puente borrowed ideas from Big-Band Jazz and produced the bold and brassy sound we associate with Mambo today.

If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady Mambo bell rhythm is implied throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style. Melodies are clearly articulated and played with passion. Mambo de Maya has a performance time of around two and a half minutes at full tempo. You can listen to a full performance the Clarinet version of this duet by following the YouTube link above.

Grá, (Irish for Love), is a beautiful original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Soprano Saxophones.

This duet is inspired by the Irish sean-nós style of singing. Originally sung unaccompanied in the Irish Gaelic language, in more recent times the melodies have been adapted as instrumentals, harmonised and given accompaniment. The songs are most often about love and loss and Grá aims to capture this melancholy mood.

Grá is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Players can add their own appropriate ornaments and variations to the melody if they wish. Grá has a performance time of a little over three minutes. Click the link above to hear a full performance of the Clarinet version of Grá on Youtube.

Just a Closer Walk With Thee is an Afro-American Spiritual Hymn and Song. This version is arranged as a duet for two Soprano Saxophones.

Little is known of the origins of Just a Closer Walk With Thee, other than it was sung in African-American churches in the nineteenth century. National religious conventions in the 1930s gave the hymn a wider audience. Many versions were recorded in the 1940s and Just a Closer Walk With Thee was quickly adopted as a standard by the New Orleans Jazz revival.

Just a Closer Walk With Thee is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is played, with variations, five times in 6/8 meter. Click the link above to listen to a full Youtube performance of the Clarinet version of this duet.

Just a Closer Walk With Thee is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around three minutes, this version of Just a Closer Walk With Thee is perfect for worship and concert performances, both formal and informal.

Bublitschki is a Ukrainian/Jewish Folk song, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Soprano Saxophones.

Initially popular in the Soviet Union, a recording by the Barry Sisters in 1939 brought this song to an international audience.

Bublitschki is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in two sections and is played twice with a short coda and constant variations in the accompaniment. Bublitschki is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. Good King Wenceslas is a much-loved Christmas carol. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Swing style for two Soprano Saxophones. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

The melody of Good King Wenceslas is Finnish in origin and dates back to the thirteenth century. The Christmas lyrics we know and love were added much later by English hymn-writer John Mason Neale and were first published in 1853.

With a performance time a little over three minutes, this version of Good King Wenceslas is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz swing style is a fun and fresh take on this familiar traditional tune.

Good King Wenceslas is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Samba de Simão is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Soprano Saxophones.

This duet is based on the style of Samba. With roots in West African music, modern Samba emerged in Rio de Janiero, Brazil at the beginning of the twentieth century. There are many forms, both sung and instrumental, and the Samba rhythm has found its way around the world into jazz and modern electronic pop and dance music. Samba has become a cultural symbol of Brazil, with Rio’s famous Samba schools producing theatrical and ultra-professional showpieces for the annual carnival.

If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated, the melody should always flow, the two underlying strong beats in each bar should always be felt, and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Samba de Simão has a performance time of two and a half minutes. Follow the link above to listen to a complete YouTube performance of the Clarinet version of Samba de Simão.
