The Elite Syncopations was one of many solo piano rags written by Scott Joplin in the wake of his success with Maple Leaf Rag. Published in 1903, The Elite Syncopations followed the classic four part structure that Joplin had developed with earlier compositions. In 1974 the Royal Ballet in London produced a ballet based on ragtime music using The Elite Syncopations as both the title and main theme.

Amor, (Portuguese for Love), is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Soprano Saxophones, and is one of series of pieces celebrating Love in different languages around the world.

This duet is based on the Brazilian style of Bossa Nova which evolved in Rio de Janeiro during the late 1950s. Bossa in its purest form is lyrical song accompanied by nylon-stringed guitar. The rhythm derives from Samba but is played at around half tempo. The harmony is often complex and influenced by jazz; indeed it was the collaboration between guitarist João Gilberto and American Saxophonist Stan Getz that led to the huge international popularity of Bossa Nova in the 1960s and beyond.

If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Go Down Moses is an Afro-American Spiritual Song. This version is arranged as a duet for two Soprano Saxophones.

Go Down Moses was first published in 1853 after Afro-American Contraband regiments sang it during the American Civil War. In the recording age Go Down Moses was made famous by Paul Robeson and Louis Armstrong. William Faulkner named a novel after the song and there is a memorable performance in the 1941 film, Sullivan’s Travels.

Huapango de Hannah is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Soprano Saxophones. The Huapango is a traditional Mexican style of music and dance, often mixing triple and duple metres. It is played on violin, accordion, and local 5-string variants of the guitar such as the vihuela, huapanguera and jarana. The Huapango rhythm famously inspired the song America in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.
