The vocal parts are pretty straight-forward, though the ALTO part is not exactly like the harmony found in most hymnals – it’s more a mix of the usual ALTO and TENOR parts. The piano accompaniment is different for both verses adding a slightly different sound for the two verses used in this arrangement.  The vocal ranges are limited and accessible by most singers and could easily be used by other voice combinations (SOPRANO-BARITONE, TENOR-BASS, etc.). The vocal ranges are as follows: SOPRANO – F#4 to C5; ALTO – A3 to G4. Since the court of Anhalt-Cöthen was Calvinist, Church music was limited to congregational psalms and hymns. Bach’s work during this period consisted of writing chamber music for the Prince, who was an accomplished violinist, gambist and harpsichordist. Other works from this period include the Cello Suites, the viola da gamba sonatas, the Flute sonatas and the partita for solo flute and the Orchestral Suites.  The Sonata presented here is in the four movement “Church Sonataâ€� style. The first five sonatas all share the same principal of Slow-Fast-Slow-Fast with a generally unified three-voice “Trio Sonataâ€� texture. Passages which include double stops have been arranged as grace notes, which should be performed rapidly, but with a sensitivity to creating the necessary resonance which suggest implied chords.

This jazz composition is based on the hauntingly beautiful 15th century medieval tune that is commonly used for the Advent carol O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.  I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody.  The accompaniment has a broken two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line.  I have altered the melody and moved much of it to the off beats.  As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato.  I have chosen 4 of the many historic verses that are more inclusive and general.  This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire.  (I have also published several versions on this site for flute or clarinet solo using various instrumental accompaniments as a duet.)  (Also as a piano solo.)range - melody - 10th, low B to D3 pages score;  3:17 minutes.

Program notes: Mark Ludwig came to me in the spring of 1997 wondering if I would be interested in writing a piece of music for the Hawthorne String Quartet that would bring to the attention of the world what many Tibetans are experiencing as exiles or political prisoners under the rule of the Peoples Republic of China. I told him I would be. So, he loaned me several books on Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, a video about a Tibetan ethnomusicologist who is currently in prison for spying, and a few recordings of Tibetan folk music. I found the material very intriguing and fascinating. And toward the end of a five-week residency at the American Academy in Rome that summer, I completed the first draft of Tantric Psalms. The work was completed a week later at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1999, I revisited the score and added a voice so that the beautiful Tibetan chants and prayers can be invoked.
