Caravan is one of Duke Ellington's (1899-1974) most famous compositions—although he didn't actually write it. That credit goes to Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol (1900-1984), a member of the Ellington's big band from 1929 to 1944. Tizol composed the theme in 1936 and promptly sold the rights to lyricist Irving Mills for only $25. The song became an instant hit—jazz critic Ted Gioia expllains that it fit perfectly with the musical exoticism that patrons were demanding at [Ellington's] regular gig at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Indeed, much jazz from this era, especially Ellington's, was steeped in Orientalist aesthetics. Although we hear it now as a self-contained musical phenomenon, we must acknowledge this music's problematics even as we continue to celebrate its progressive and revolutionary qualities. Part of my interest in this piece is in its capacity as a vessel in which I can explore my own multiform identity as an expatriate of the Middle East, a carillonist, and a lover of jazz. This arrangement reflects what might happen when these three perspectives collide. Ellington recorded Caravan more than 100 times, and the names of its additional interpreters reads as a history of jazz itself: Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and dozens more all brought their own spin to the tune. What makes it particularly special, though, is its appeal to listeners outside the jazz fandom. The 2014 film Whiplash introduced mass audiences to the song's unique atmosphere and to the genius of the Duke and his sidemen, thanks to an outstanding big band arrangement by John Wasson. My setting of the tune for the carillon recalls both Duke and Tizol's original version and this more recently popular edition.In this arrangement, I hope to highlight the carillon's capacity as a percussion instrument, and to use this as a bridge into the world of jazz. Where possible, additional chord notes have been added up to 5 strings. Additional bass notes have been added to get a richer cello-like range, in particular E bass note added in bars 13-14 and octave lower bass notes added to bar 15, an A bass note added to bar 18.A transcription of the original cello score is included for comparison and understanding of the additions. This allows a player to create their own alternatives if desired. Approach to performingListen to cellists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Rostropovich performing this piece to get a sense of it's slow, majestic nature on the original instrument. On guitar we can't get the length of expression on a single string but we can use dynamics and space.If the additional bass notes are excluded, it can also be played with a plectrum.

Published by James Marshall Music (A0.913621). Six Bagatelles for Clarinet and Piano were composed in March, 2020 for Beethoven 250. They are drawn from Beethoven piano music. The sources are piano sonatas, bagatelles, and a landler. With my ever faithful friend and collaborator, London Clarinetist Alison Eales in mind, I sought to add to the Clarinet repertoire. Having written five pieces over the past two years in English manner for Clarinet (English Sonatina, English Autumn, London Concerto, Enchanted London, Postcards from England), a tip of the hat to the Austrian Titan seemed appropriate. Beethoven, unlike Mozart before him and Brahms after him, wrote no solo music for Clarinet. The Trio and scoring in Symphonies are his unique contributions to the repertoire. Beethoven was a contemporary of Weber who wrote extensively for solo Clarinet. With most of the passages being arrangements, my original homage passages frame the settings and are juxtaposed with them. The tone of the music is one of homage and recollection with no intent to imitate or parody the great master. Bagatelles are by nature lighter fare of shorter duration. Hence no long, authentic passages with inherent mood swings and elaborations. By adapting the music to the bagatelle form, it reflects the less ponderous side of the composer. Although Beethoven’s music is capable of great depth and despair, the more transcendent, pastoral, and exuberant moods prevail in these pieces. The final two movements, Recitative and Rondo, draw on the Waldstein Sonata and Emperor Piano Concerto, and Sonata Op 2 No3 as well. The Rondo theme is in Eb, my own, is reminiscent of the Emperor Concerto in it intense yet lilting motif. Perhaps the listener will hear hints of Weber, a clarinet favorite of mine, as well in this final movement. Two movements are scored for Clarinet in A, and four movements for Clarinet in Bb.

Lully (1632-1687), composed in 1677, has been compiled from part-books belonging to the Euing Library in the University of Glasgow, and we wish to record our gratitude to that University, and to its librarian, Mr. R.O. The original score consists of a Petit Choeur for semi-chorus and soli, a Grand Choeur for full chorus, and an orchestra consisting of two trumpets, strings and basso continuo. Although there is no timpani part in the Glasgow part-books, it seems evident that there is need for timpani in performance. The editor has therefore ventured to include a part for them. The soloists required are SSAATTB. Some of their parts could well be sung by members of the Petit Choeur. This edition presents the text of the original sources except for the piano part which is partly a realization of the figured bass (marked continuo) and partly an adaption of the instrumental score (marked piano score).
