Dotzauer (1783—1860), was composed and published around 1815. It is one of the many set of variations written upon the theme “Їхав козак за Дунай� (“The Cossack rode beyond the Danube�) during the second decade of the XIX century, others including those by Beethoven and Hummel. Despite the title, the theme is of Ukrainian origin but, at the time of its diffusion in Europe, under a German disguise, the region that is now Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire. The language of the text makes its origin unmistakable today. After a fascinating slow Introduction, the theme comes and is followed by twenty variations, most of which requiring great virtuosity. This is a concert piece, lasting anywhere between 14 and 24 minutes according to whether repeats will be played or not. An outstanding variety of techniques is employed, making this a true challenge for even the most gifted players. This edition is based on the oldest surviving source, the first edition by Friedrich Hofmeister. It corrects the most glaring mistakes, and adds notes where ambiguity arises. This edition is dedicated to Yuriy Leonovich.

DUE CANTI, for 25 flutes, draws inspiration mainly from Dante Aligheri´s well-known narrative poem La Divina Comedia. The piece consists of two contrasting movements:  Inferno and Paradiso.  I´ve tried to paint with sounds some of the vivid images that appear in the work. Inferno, a world of chaos and despair, is a vibrant cacophony consisting of an insistent, mechanical ostinato, dissonant counterpoints and frullato cries in the upper registers of all flutes. Paradiso, a place of order and sensual delight, features shiny open fifths in the medium-high register, a theme in long notes which is symmetrical in design (as to represent God-like perfection and balance), as well as long, lyrical solos for the first flute and the bass flute. A secondary source of inspiration for the piece was the painting The Garden of Earthly Delights by the great Hieronymus Bosch.

In the complete, almost one-hour cycle, Machaut's original compositions, which are to be performed a cappella, have been interwoven with Holliger's transcriptions. Four of the transcriptions have been arranged for three violas alone. The traditional monophonic lay 'Amours doucement me tente', however, appears in a new four-part vocal setting. It is only in the concluding complainte 'Tels rit au main qui au soir pleure' that the singing voices join the violas.

It was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism.Regsi Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.   4, BMV   4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement is more complex than the previous one. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, the final chorus from his Cantata No.   4, a straightforward chorale setting of the hymn (Regis has also added a fifth part). This is followed by Bach's Chorale Prelude, BMV 625, a piece from his Orgelbuchlein (Little Organ Book), a collection of 46 Preludes for organ, written almost exclusively during the 1708-1717 period, while Bach was court organist at Weimar. For the final selection, Regis has placed the polyphonic and imitative chorus, Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, da Tod und Leben rungen (It was a strange battle, that death and life waged), which Bach had placed in the middle of his Cantata No.   4.This arrangement is for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 3 Bb Trumpets and 2 Trombones.
