This intermediate piece for piano (2 min. 30 sec.) is the eighth in a series of impromptus inspired by sounds of childhood, namely themes from early 90s video game consoles like Nintendo.  This composition is indicative of many of the bluesy soundtracks that also contain splashes of unexpected and quirky sonorities, giving it a bona fide unearthly quality.  Think of a western shoot-out aboard an alien spaceship.  Performers should keep the tempo rock-solid with no rubato.  The syncopated ostinato bass pattern may take some getting used to at first, but it is essential to the entire arrangement.  Many of the melodic figures have crescendos or decrescendos that are unconventional, e.g. a decrescendo under an ascending phrase.  The middle section has a sixteenth note passage that should be fingered by alternating left and right hands as marked. Follow my work at www.bendockery.com.  There you can sign up to my email list and get updates on new releases plus tons of free music!

The traditional notation for this piece is at the extreme of its ability to notate piano music - and it fails miserably! It is playable only by the gifted few who have the tenacity to race through reading this incredibly fast 6 flat Eb minor notation. with its additional double flats and accidentals, some of which must be played on white keys. Surely the piece must be some kind of joke - Chopin's way of thumbing his nose at those bold enough to try to play it. It surely is NOT the great music that Chopin usually crafted.The joke is that it is not really difficult to play. It is just incredibly difficult to READ! The music can be played, although without its breakneck speed, by students at the intermediate level if reading from a key map. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. Published by John Michael Pekowski (A0.1317270). In July of 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft skimmed past Pluto revealing a dynamic landscape. Important new data was collected, helping to piece together the history of a world with a patchwork geology featuring towering mountains, flowing glaciers, and plains of ice. I was inspired by the spirit of exploration. With this is mind, I arranged semi-symmetrical sets with varying densities into pitch topologies constrained by numerical relationships. These are juxtaposed next to each other, helping to suggest the patchwork geology of Pluto. As I was composing, I gave preference to fluidic voice-leading and dramatic exposition. I also had to end with a satisfying resolution because NASA’s mission has been such a success. In fact, New Horizons continues to explore objects in the outer solar system.Conductor's note: The (optional) last twelve bars are bit of an unintentional homage to sci-fi, but have their roots in the triplet pattern established in the introduction. In this piece I was using a narrower set list, and interestingly these types of hommages are more common within the simpler numerical permutations of smaller quantites.
