A Rivendell String Quartet Arrangement - The Pop Standards Series

Written in 1917 by African-American songwriter Spencer Williams (1889-1965), Tishomingo Blues comes from the same bountiful era that produced W.C. Handy's Memphis Blues (1912), Saint Louis Blues (1914), and Beale Street Blues (1917).  Williams himself put the period to the sentence with his own iconic Basin Street Blues in 1928.

Tishomingo Blues took on a second life as the opening theme of Garrison Keillor's immensly popular radio program A Prairie Home Companion from 1987 to 2007, with Keillor providing new lyrics.

SKU: A0.1493246

Composed by Clarence Williams and Spencer Williams. Arranged by L.C. Harnsberger. Blues,Chamber,Historic,Jazz,Standards. 26 pages. LCH Music #1069899. Published by LCH Music (A0.1493246).

“Royal Garden Blues” was written by Clarence and Spencer Williams in 1919, and first became a hit in 1921 when it was recorded by The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. It is considered the first popular song to be based on a riff (a repetitive short rhythmic phrase) and is now a jazz standard.

This timeless blues song has since been performed by bands led by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Al Hirt; blues artists Mamie Smith, Ethel Waters, and Ella Fitzgerald; legendary performers Bix Beiderbecke, Sidney Bechet, Pete Fountain, Django Reinhardt, Art Tatum; and more recently by Chet Atkins, Herb Ellis, Branford Marsalis, and the Canadian Brass.

This woodwind quintet arrangement is based on the upbeat recording by pianist Cliff Jackson, giving it an unmistakable 1940s stride feel with relentless rhythm and colorful harmonies. Each player has interesting parts, making it enjoyable for both performers and the audience. This fun and exhilarating piece is perfect for any concert.

Composed by Spencer Williams. Arranged by Dave Gingras and John E. Dosher. Jazz. Score. 3 pages. DAVID LEE GINGRAS #774000. Published by DAVID LEE GINGRAS (A0.1173849).

Basin Street Blues is a song often performed by Dixieland jazz bands, written by Spencer Williams in 1928 and recorded that year by Louis Armstrong. The verse with the lyric Won't you come along with me / To the Mississippi... was later added by Glenn Miller and Jack Teagarden. The Basin Street of the title refers to the main street of Storyville, the red-light district of early 20th-century New Orleans, north of the French Quarter. It became a red light district in 1897. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. For interest and to keep the rhythm moving, we added some pretty cool left-hand fills. We hope you like what we've done with the song!

SKU: A0.1458413

Composed by Spencer Williams. Arranged by Will Corbin. Blues,Historic,Jazz. 22 pages. Will Corbin #1037395. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458413).

Basin Street sits on the edge of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. It has since been recorded by dozens of other artists.
