Published by DR GARY D BELSHAW (A0.796779). Advanced Intermediate. SCORE ONLY: 33 pages. Duration: 9 minutes.Advanced Solo Violin plus Intermediate Violins I & II, Violas, Cellos, and Basses.            Midnight Train to St. Petersburg was inspired by the train ride itself during the composer’s trek to Russia in 2006. The trip was made by faculty and students of Wayland Baptist University’s School of Music to allow the University’s Pioneer Band to participate in Victory Day festivities in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Impressions of the countryside during the train ride itself, as well as the overwhelming beauty of the country and two of her cities, informed much of the music performed here.            A minimalistic approach to the composition seemed suitable. Persistent rhythmic patterns throughout the score invites listeners to imagine being inside a passenger rail car. An alternation between two- and three-eighth note groupings captures sound of steel wheels rolling along iron rails of varying lengths. The harmonies are simple, played almost entirely on open strings. Everyone involved in a performance can enjoy the exuberance of bright harmonic language. A short, simple melody, played by the upper strings is answered by the soloist - possibly the class instructor - who then is allowed some elaboration for a few measures.            Students attempting a strings-methods class often find their more advanced musicianship stifled by working only in rudimental instrumental methods. Since so many pitches are played on open strings, student’s left hands are eased through the performance while the right hands move binarily in short, quick strokes. The result is a work that gratifies the student musician while developing an appreciation and understanding of string performance.

Saxophone quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.764653 Composed by Gustav Holst (1874-1934). Arranged by James Pybus. 20th Century,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 97 pages. James Pybus #36481. Published by James Pybus (A0.764653). In 1905 Gustav Holst became Director of Music at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, London, a post which he retained right up until his death in 1934. St. Paul's Suite was written for the school’s string orchestra in 1912. The work is in four movements: a Jig, reminiscent of English fiddle tunes; a muted Ostinato (Presto); an Intermezzo which starts fairly slowly and softly, switching abruptly to a short Vivace section. The rhythmic tune here is based on an Arab song which Holst had noted in his sketchbook a few years earlier while on holiday in Algeria. After this brief interlude, the music returns to the slower opening tempo, and in the very last bars of the movement ‘the descending chromatic sixths are like a gesture of farewell to the good old days: never again did [Holst] indulge in such an unblushing display of nineteenth-century romanticism’--- these rather severe words are his daughter’s, quoted from her biography of her father. The Finale is framed around a familiar English folk tune (the Dargason), which, in the course of the movement, is used as a counter-melody to the even more familiar Greensleeves. Holst was evidently fond of this tune, as he also used it as the concluding movement of his well-known Suite No. 2 in F, Op. 28b for Military Band. Durations: 1. Jig 4:00; 2. Ostinato 1:28; 3. Intermezzo 3:41; 4. Finale (The Dargason) 4:00; Total time 13:09 I wrote this arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet in 2004, with revisions in 2015. It is a challenging yet ultimately rewarding piece for both audiences and players. contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Choral Choir (SSA) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1003298 Composed by Dennis Tobenski. Contemporary,Folk. Octavo. 12 pages. Dennis Tobenski #539737. Published by Dennis Tobenski (A0.1003298). Sunset: St. Louis for SSA choir and piano was written at the suggestion of a conductor I met at the 2013 American Choral Directors’ Association national conference in Dallas, TX. He lamented the lack of new music for SSA choir that kept the voices within a restricted range yet wasn’t simplistic, and also didn’t use a restricitve number of accompanying instruments; throughout the week his sentiment was echoed by countless other conductors who I had the pleasure of spending time with. At that point, I also had no music for treble/women’s choir in my catalog, so this piece is not only an attempt to fill in this hole in the repertoire, but also an attempt to fill in the hole in my own choral output. The piece opens with a short passage for solo piano evocative of late afternoon light on water which leads into the voices’ hazy entrance of close diatonic harmonies and loose, liquid rhythms. After this soft opening, the piano begins a gently undulating, water-like accompaniment that – like the Mississippi – flows by, bringing harmonic shifts and swells. The words Dream by the river captured my imagination, conjuring images of the city drifting to sleep as the sun sets, so I couldn’t resist making the single word Dream into a refrain, weaving it into the larger structure of the poem, which makes the piece not only a love song to the city, but also a lullaby. The vocal parts have a compressed range: Soprano 1 has a few unsustained Gs, and the Alto line never drops below B-flat. There are some minor challenges with rhythm and pitch (hemiolas, tuplets, and some harmonic cross-relations with the piano), but all are navigable. The piece was written and prepared for publication in a compositional frenzy between 1pm on March 30, 2013 and 7pm on March 31, 2013 in Montauk, NY.Duration: ca. 4 min. Composed: 2013 Registered with ASCAP. Please email dennis@dennistobenski.com so that your performance of Sunset: St. Louis can be added to Dennis' website calendar.
