His style is characterized by the use of false relations between the major and minor modes. ‘Draw on Sweet Night’ comes from John Wilbye’s Second Set of Madrigals of 1609, published when the composer was 35. It has become one of Wilbye’s most cherished works and has been recorded by the likes of I Fagiolini, The Tallis Scholars and The Consort of Musicke. Wilbye labelled his score apt both for viols and voices so I feel justified in making this instrumental arrangement. It was first performed at the Dawn Service on the Gallipoli Peninsula by a combined choir of students from St. Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows' School in 2015. This atmospheric piece creates a haunting image of lives lost and dreams shattered, ultimately leaving us with a message of hope that peace will be our inheritance. This arrangement is for SATB choir with piano accompaniment.
