Choral Choir (SA) - Digital Download

SKU: A0.846749

By Steeleye Span. By Traditional. Arranged by Debbie Warren. A Cappella,Folk,Traditional. Octavo. 4 pages. Keep Calm and Keep Singing #453439. Published by Keep Calm and Keep Singing (A0.846749).

A rousing 2 part arrangement for female voices of this traditional folk song made popular by Steeleye Span. The song is sung by a girl who met and fell in love with Johnny the shoemaker. However, it seems that he has now gone to sea to earn his fortune. Whether this is his idea or hers is not clear but she is certainly looking forward to the day she becomes a sea captain's wife!

By Kirstie Smith. By Anonymous, from Piae Cantiones. Arranged by Kirstie Smith. Christmas,Classical,Early Music,Medieval,Praise & Worship. Accompaniment. Duration 136. Kirstie Smith #1080724. Published by Kirstie Smith (A0.1505338).

This is an original piano composition to accompany my uplifting TTBB arrangement of the well-loved traditional Christmas song Gaudete! (Rejoice!) popularised by Steeleye Span and The King's Singers, skilfully crafted for Male Voice Choirs and choral ensembles to include piano accompaniment.

The choral score features the original sacred latin text with well-crafted melodic, harmonic, dynamic and textural variations, slowly building to a rousing 'tierce de picardie' finale, to delight audiences and singers alike.

Perfect for Christmas concerts, carol singing and seasonal festivals. May also be performed with additional higher (Soprano /  Alto) voices.

Watch the video score here (for Directors' and Educational use).

By Samantha Hogan. By Samantha Hogan. Arranged by Samantha Hogan. 21st Century,Christmas,Medieval,Renaissance,Sacred. 54 pages. Coffee Seal Music #1084296. Published by Coffee Seal Music (A0.1509045).

Timing: 6-8 Minutes

Difficulty- later Intermediate -Advanced, due to the key signature.

Suitable For: Any time of the year, but especially around Christmas time, or at a concert that needs a Medieval flair.

Gaudete is perhaps the most famous Christmas melody from the Middle Ages, likely dating from the 1500s, and covered by many a modern band, including The King's Singers, Erasure, and Steeleye Span, to name a few.

To write this piece, I took motifs from the tune and wrote my own melodies, avoiding a direct transcription of any part of the original melody.

Mvt 1, Fanfare, is a bright opening to the suite. After all, the word Gaudete translates to “rejoice”!

Mvt 2 plays with the Pavane and Galliard feel. Both are distinct dances, and while this movement is more somber than danceable to the average listener, it utilizes some tricks that the medieval composers used, as well as draws inspiration from medieval compositional techniques for harmonies. Just like medieval dances, if you were to add a repeat sign at the end, you could play this movement ad nauseam and choose to never end it.

Mvt 3, Scherzo, plays with your expectation of time but is a fun jaunt after the serious tone of Mvt 2 nonetheless. If you like Gordon Jacob (not a Renaissance composer), you’ll probably like this movement.

I’ve included Mvt 0, Just Gaudete, as a bonus. You may begin or end the suite with this movement, play the opening statement to introduce the audience to the tune, or omit it entirely. You may even shuffle the order of movements if you’d like.

Composed by Piae Cantiones. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Baroque,Christmas,Classical,Pop. 9 pages. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.504005).

Gaudete rejoice [ye] is a sacred Christmas carol, thought to have been composed in the 16th century. It was published in Piae Cantiones, a collection of Finnish/Swedish sacred songs published in 1581. No music is given for the verses, but the standard tune comes from older liturgical books. It is sometimes entitled Gaudete, Christus est Natus. British folk rock group Steeleye Span had a hit in 1973 (No. 14, UK singles chart) with an a cappella recording of the song. Guitarist Bob Johnson had heard the song when he attended a folk-carol service with his father-in-law in Cambridge, and brought it to the attention of the rest of the band. (Unlike the album version which fades up slowly and fades down slowly, the single was at the same volume for the entire length of the song.) This single is one of only three top 50 British hits to be sung fully in Latin.
