♫ Isaiah 8 ends and Isaiah 9 begins with the brutal Assyrian invasion and deportation of the northern 10 tribes of Israel (586 BC). Assyria was so effective in disrupting the nation, that we call the 10 northern tribes the “lost tribes of Israel.� God sent many prophets to warn the people that they were failing to keep their covenant with God and that judgment day was coming for the nation.

♫ The tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali were located near the Sea of Galilee. They, like all the Northern people, would curse God on the day of darkness as they were killed or deported.

♫ But Isaiah sees ahead to a time when Zebulun and Naphtali will be overcome with light and joy. “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.� This prophecy was fulfilled as Jesus healed and taught in the cities of ancient Zebulun and Naphtali.

♫ based on Zechariah 11, John 10, and Matthew 27

♫ The Judah of Zechariah was marred by exiles who struggled greatly to obey God’s law. Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai and Malachi contain many passages that point out the sin of the people. Joshua, the current high priest, is pictured in one of Zechariah’s visions as wearing filthy apparel, desperately needing cleansing. Sheep in Bible times are grown more for their wool and milk, not so much for the slaughterhouse. Zechariah likens the leadership of Judah to shepherds and flock owners who are primarily concerned with selling meat. But there is a good shepherd who intervenes to lead the flock. He is mistreated by the owners and the shepherds and paid the price of a slave for his efforts. The good shepherd, casts the price on the floor for the potter.

♫ Zechariah is looking ahead to a time when the religious leaders of Judah were short on compassion and the needs of people. Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd. We see several parallel’s here in John 10. He called the religious leaders of His day, thieves and robbers, and predators. Judas Iscariot was paid the price of a slave to betray Jesus, which he threw to the ground, but was scooped to purchase a Potter’s Field!

♫ Unlike the other songs in the suite, Christ Jesus, Our Hope is not based on one specific prophecy of scripture. Instead, the song introduces and concludes both the Advent and Passion Suites. Mankind has often hoped to find a leader(s) who can make a real difference in people’s lives. Humanity yearns for justice, the end of poverty, oppression, atrocities, and war. Messiah is presented in the Hebrew Bible as the Ideal King, a person who is just, wise, powerful, capable, yet. compassionate. Messiah is not just a Jewish king who will favor Israel but will bring true prosperity to the entire earth.

♫ In Psalm 22, David describes the pain he is feeling in the current controversy he was facing. Deliberate hyperbole was one of the figures of speech used in ancient Jewish culture (as it is used in our culture today.) Probably much of what David is describing is somewhat metaphoric. 

But for Jesus on the cross, this Psalm all too real. Jesus literally lived Psalm 22 on the cross.

He will actually shun popularity. His actions will be characterized by gentleness and compassion for the needy. When many of the leadership of Jesus’ day were obsessed with power and popularity and were often willing to sacrifice the real needs of people to further their agenda, Messiah will have a totally different agenda.

♫ The Chautauqua movement (popular from 1874-1920) was started at Lake Chautauqua, New York. It was modeled on a summer camp format and featured adult education and social reform. Christian instruction, preaching, and worship were a big part of the Chautauqua experience, although some of them were more secularized and resembled summer school.

♫ Growing up in a hymn singing church, there were 2 wonderful hymns that spoke of the holiness of God: Holy, Holy, Holy and Day is Dying in the West. The first celebrates the morning, the second the evening and night. The hymn tune for Day is Dying in the West is named CHAUTAUQUA and Mary Lathbury wrote the lyrics on the shore of Lake Chatauqua.

♫ Originally composed for choirs in Haiti, the choral version (in French) has been rearranged for piano solo. 3 versions (French SAB, English SAB, and piano solo) are available on YouTube. 

♫ Fanny Crosby (who lived in the slums of Manhattan) was visiting her close friend at Knapp Mansion in Brooklyn. (Phoebe Knapp's husband, Joseph Fairchild Knapp, was founder of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.) Phoebe Knapp played a new tune she had just written several times for her friend Fanny Crosby. What do you think the tune says? Crosby replied, Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine. Crosby then dictated the lyrics for Knapp to write down.
