        The context of the song The LORD is in His Holy Temple is often overlooked in singing this song. Worship in the OT is a rather noisy affair with instruments, singing, shouting, dancing, and public praise. In the Old Testament, quiet in the Temple of God is an ominous, frightening thing, because God’s judgment is to be pronounced! I Surrender All is paired here with The LORD is in His Holy Temple thinking back to Isaiah 6 where Isaiah’s reaction to encountering the presence of God is surrender to Him. Yielding to God is, not only the prerequisite for avoiding God’s judgment, it is the path to peace and joy.

        Without the doublestops of the violin part, the wind parts may not seem very challenging at first sight, but to play a beautiful legato with a full tone at piano and pianissimo (slowly, too) is much harder than it sounds. The phrasing and the intensity of the music is critical to the message of the piece. It will take considerable attention between the soloist and the pianist to communicate the moody rubato basic to the best performance of the arrangement.

♫ The Chautauqua movement (popular from 1874-1920) was started at Lake Chautauqua, New York. It was modeled on a summer camp format and featured adult education and social reform. Christian instruction, preaching, and worship were a big part of the Chautauqua experience, although some of them were more secularized and resembled summer school.

♫ Growing up in a hymn singing church, there were 2 wonderful hymns that spoke of the holiness of God: Holy, Holy, Holy and Day is Dying in the West. The first celebrates the morning, the second the evening and night. The hymn tune for Day is Dying in the West is named CHAUTAUQUA and Mary Lathbury wrote the lyrics on the shore of Lake Chatauqua.

  Isaac Watts was an early hymn writer. Using hymns in the protestant church was controversial. The previous practice had been to sing the Psalms straight from the Bible, exclusively. In contrast to the Psalms, hymns expressed interpretation of the text and personal experiences. Like his poem Joy to the World the Lord is Come, I Sing the Mighty Power of God deserves to be sung and cherished.

   The lyrics were first published in Lynchburg, Virginia in the 1811 camp meeting songbook A General Selection of the Newest and Most Admired Hymns and Spiritual Songs Now in Use. In most early printings, no author is listed for the text. The 1848 hymnal The Hesperian Harp attributes the text to Alexander means, a Methodist pastor from Oxford

   Most sources attribute the hymn's melody to the 1701 English song The Ballad of Captain Kidd, but the melody predates the Kidd tune, however, possibly by more than a century. Camp meeting attendees during the Second Great Awakening would sing the hymns from text only hymnals to a variety of popular melodies. The text and melody were first published together in The Southern Harmony, a book of shape note hymns compiled by William Walker. (excerpted from Wikipedia)
