For Brass Band. This rock chart by Mars Bonfire, a native of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada was first performed by the band “Steppenwolf†in 1968. It was later featured in the 1969 film “Easy Rider†featuring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Terry Southern, as motorcyclists travelling through the southern United States. “Mars Bonfire†was the stage name for Dennis McCrohan, who, along with his brother and drummer for Steppenwolf, Jerry, changed their last names to Edmonton. The original version was a ballad. Bonfire offered the song to other bands, but it wasn’t until Steppenwolf that it morphed into the current sped-up and rock-style chart we have today. This version became Steppenwolf’s most successful single, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. In 2018, the song was inducted into the singles category of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This spirited setting can easily be performed by a 2nd section band or lower. The Principal Cornet will enjoy having a challenging solo in the break (or they can improvise their own). It’s great for concerts and definitely a crowd pleaser. Duration ~3:20. 44 pages.
