Forever And A Day is an original piece for brass quintet composed by Steve Dekker. This brass quintet was adapted from Dekker's original 18-piece big band composition which was commisioned and performed by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra in April 2023 at The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Kansas City, MO. This piece is medium difficult and is accessible to a good high school group or college/service level band. Forever And A Day can be performed by a traditional 5-piece brass quintet or by adding the optional auxiliary percussion parts provided.

The piece begins with a wistful chorale before leading into a quasi funk groove that is propelled throughout the composition via contemporary harmonies, rhythms and mood transformations. The energy of this piece is fueled by the juxtaposition of modern style versus Classical elements.

Careful attention should be paid to balance/blend, steady rhythm, dynamics, articulation and meter changes. Optional auxiliary percussion parts are included for shaker and tambourine if desired. Run time is 5:54. Enjoy!

Experiment #1 is an original composition written for brass quintet. Experiment #1 was inspired by a curiosity to explore the different sounds available in music notation software. As a result, this piece was originally written for synths, keyboards, bass and drums. After completing the piece, I found the sounds and instrumentation lacked warmth and character. Ultimately, I decided the experiment would be to score it for brass quintet and see what happens.

There are three basic themes or sections utilized in Experiment #1. The themes move from heroic to contemporary and culminate in a recapitualtion of the hero theme. An eighth-note ostinato statement serves as a recurring motif connecting each section. The various themes are spread across the quintet with a variety of textures and contrapuntal devices serving to further elevate the composition.

Experiment #1 is accessible to high school, college and service band level groups. This piece showcases mulitiple stylistic concepts from Classical music, modern Jazz and contemporary music. It is an excellent teaching piece and would be a solid and innovative choice for concert or competition. Run time is 4:48.

John Lennon's Imagine is arguably one of the most beautiful and inspirational pieces ever written. As a lifelong fan of the Beatles and the solo work that followed the band's break up, I was inspired to compose a trombone quartet that preserved the message and intent of this Lennon classic.

The original theme and harmonic structure are held intact at the introduction but quickly give way to musical development through reharmonization, textural shifts and contrapuntal movement. In addition to maintaining steady tempo, careful attention should be paid to blend, balance, intonation and sensitivity to the melodic line.

Imagine for trombone quartet is accessible to high school, college and service level bands. As a trombonist, my intent was to make this arrangement interesting, fun and challenging to play. This arrangement can be showcased as a ballad for concert, festival or competition events. Tuba can also be utilized in lieu of bass trombone.

Experiment #1 for Brass Quintet

The composer combines lyrical heroism with jazzy rhythms to create a beautiful and approachable work for brass. An effective technique used is to punctuate the music with periodic silences or unison moments. There are a few quasi-Penny Lane measures for first trumpet midway through, followed by some nice tuba solos, then the piece ends with an appropriately What if...? feeling!
